Head Coach Lewis Jackson goes over a play against JSU
Box Score

DeMarcus Robinson's career and game-high 27 points were not enough as Alabama State fell 70-68 to Jackson State when the Tigers Julysses Nobles hit a shot from around 30 feet at the horn to give JSU the win.

"We did all we could do," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We threw one up to take the lead and they were able to get up the court and get it off and it went in.  I thought our guys fought really hard on the road and showed some toughness and some grit."

"We knew it would be a tough battle because they needed to win one at home and we were certainly trying to get two on the road and the shot went in for them."

It was a game which saw the Hornets trail 65-58 with 1:32 left in the game.  A Robinson three cut the lead to 65-61 and Jamel Waters stole the ball just a few seconds later and hit Bobby Brown who canned another three with 1:11 left to cut the lead to 65-64.

Another Waters steal with 50 seconds left gave the Hornets the ball with a chance to take the lead and Waters was fouled and hit both free throws to put ASU up 66-65 with 33 seconds left.

JSU's Brandon West then got free under the basket to give the Tigers back the lead at 67-66 with only :16 left.  Waters again took over and hit a shot from the left elbow with 2.5 seconds left to put ASU up 68-67 to lead to the hectic final seconds.  After a timeout Nobles was able to get the inbounds pass and push the ball up the court to get off the shot right before the horn and unfortunately for the Hornets it went in.

Brandon Graham joined Robinson in double digits with 11 points while Brown and Waters finished with nine points each.  Brown and Luther Page led ASU's rebounding effort with seven boards each as ASU finished with 33 rebounds.

ASU shot 40 percent from the field, but hit 24 of 32 free throws for 75 percent.  The Hornets hit six of their 16 three point field goals for 38 percent.

"It was a good, hard fought game on both sides tonight and we wanted to attack their bigs and we were able to do that and got them in foul trouble," Jackson said.  "But their guy made a tough shot and you have to take your hat off to him because it was long and it seemed like it stayed up there a long time, but we have to get back to the house, regroup and get ready for the next one."

"The game is a game of runs and we made some early and they made some," Jackson said.  "We fought back and Jamel hit a big shot to put us up and that is the way the game is and that is the way it is every night in the conference.  We are going to have these types of games and tonight it was faith and family night and he (Nobles) got one answered tonight."

The first half featured eight ties and eight lead changes in a closely fought half.  Both teams had runs, but it was Robinson's shot over the backboard at the horn that gave ASU a 40-39 halftime lead.

Robinson led ASU with 17 first half points and Graham added nine.  The Hornets surprisingly out rebounded the taller Tigers 18-15 with eight of those being offensive boards, which led to 14 second chance points.

ASU shot 46.4 percent in the half and hit three of their 10 three point attempts.  ASU hit 11 of 15 free throws (73.3%).

Nobles had 11 points to lead JSU in the opening half as the Tigers shot 48 percent in the opening 20 minutes of action.

ASU will be back at home to host three consecutive games beginning with Mississippi Valley State Saturday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m.
