Hornets Arrive in Houston for Prairie View A&M

Alabama State's football team has arrived in Texas in preparation for tomorrow's game at Prairie View A&M.  It is a second consecutive week the Hornets have been on the road as they continue to look for their first road game win of the season.

ASU's biggest concern is how will they play after picking up their first loss last week at Alcorn State.  A big focus on how the game will come out will be the Hornets' ability to contain Jerry Lovelocke, the Panthers talented quarterback.

Last year in ASU's thrilling 48-42 overtime win over PVAMU, Lovelocke threw for 533 yards and four scores and enters this season completing over 53 percent of his passes, averaging over 212 yards per game which is second in the conference.

"They have a really good quarterback in Jerry Lovelocke," Head Coach Reggie Barlow said.  "There were several times last season when we had him and he would get away and make the throw.  He has some really good receivers to throw the ball to.  It's a really good offensive scheme and you have to play with your eyes and we have to make sure we are challenging their receivers."

PVAMU averages 28.6 points per game which is just behind the Hornets in third among the SWAC schools, and they are again third in the SWAC behind ASU in total offense averaging 417.6 yards per game.

"Their offensive scheme is a good one and it will be a huge challenge for us," Barlow said.  "Of course we have to step up and stop these guys."

PVAMU does give up a lot of rushing yards allowing 245.8 yards per game.  Last season Malcolm Cyrus was able to burn the Panthers for a career-high 241 yards including the final seven in overtime which was the game-winning touchdown.

"It starts with the running game with us," Barlow said.  "Malcolm Cyrus and Khalid (Thomas) and Jahaad Coleman we have to establish the run with those guys.  We have a big offensive line and we need those guys to really create a new line of scrimmage for us and it starts with that.  If we are running it well then we get an opportunity to open it up in the passing game."

Cyrus is coming off his lowest rushing production of the season with 65 yards last week against Alcorn State.  He still showed his all-around talent when he caught five passes for another 72 yards.

If the Panthers stack the line of scrimmage like Alcorn State did last week, then junior signal-caller Daniel Duhart needs to have a big game in finding a talented group of Hornet receivers.

Duhart is completing 52 percent of his passes and has thrown for 1,147 yards so far this season.  His passing yardage is second in the SWAC.  He recently moved into seventh position on the all-time passing list at ASU with 3,338 yards.  51 yards will move him into sixth.

The Hornets defense must step up their production more like they did against Mississippi Valley and Texas Southern when they only allowed 10 total points and 524 total yards in the two games.

Kourtney Berry has a team and SWAC-high 67 stops on the season, averaging over 10 tackles per game.  Daerius Washington has 50 stops and Torrey Davis has 42.
