The Alabama State women's soccer team comes into their match at Southern University playing perhaps their best brand of soccer on the season thus far with an awakened offense and a new found confidence brewing with a continual starting lineup.Â
Â
On the other side of the field, Southern enters the contest with a stingy defensive persona. The Jaguars have allowed no goals in the past five matches and have taken two of its previous three matches into double overtime for a stalemate with conference opponents Mississippi Valley State and Alabama A&M.Â
Â
On Sunday, Alabama State (6-9 overall, 3-3 SWAC) and Southern (5-8-1 overall, 4-1-1 SWAC) will meet in a hot offense versus a hot defense storyline at 1 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La, at A.W. Mumford Stadium.Â
Â
The Lady Hornets, winners of three straight, have collected multiple goals in each of the last four matches. Alabama State defeated Southern 2-0 on goals from
Aaliyah Lewis and
Alexandria Cannon last Oct. 11 in Montgomery, Ala.Â
Â
Lewis leads ASU with 12 goals and six assists while
Shelbi Vienna-Hallam is now second on the team with 13 points (three goals, seven assists). Each player had a goal and an assist in Friday's 2-1 comeback victory at Jackson State.Â
Â
The Jaguars are led by junior Jami Blackston, who has four goals and an assist including a pair of winning goals on the season. Midfielders Fabiola Parra and Jessica Persico are the only other players on the Jaguars with multiple goals on the year. Each player has scored twice.Â
Â
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Forde has been the mainstay in net for Southern, appearing in all 14 matches. Forde has 91 saves with a 2.35 goals against average. She has a .740 save percentage with four shutouts.Â
