Box Score Led by the efforts of sophomore Britney Wright with 18 points the Lady Hornets basketball team defeated the Rattlers of Florida A&M 64-49 at the AL Lawson Center, Tuesday night.
Â
Daniele Ewert was the only other player in double digits for ASU with 15 points.Â
Jasmine Peeples led the team on the boards with 10, as she added nine points and four blocks to the win.
Â
"These ladies played almost the way I wanted them to tonight," said head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson. "We still had too many turnovers, but we did what we needed to do on the offensive side. Defensively we still missed some assignments, but in the end we got what we were looking for and that was a win."
Â
Wright had seven rebounds and was 7-13 from the field shooting 53 percent to assist the Lady Hornets to a two game win streak.Â
Kayla Tucker added eight points going 2-4 around the arch.
Â
"There was a combination of players that balanced the scoring out and that helps," Freeman-Jackson said. "It's good to be able to score but there were times, when we let Florida A&M come right back and get in the game. At the end we were able to go on a run and pull away from them."
Â
The Lady Hornets (2-0) opened up an 10-0 run midway through the opening period that the Rattlers just could not overcome. The Lady Hornets went into the half up by 12 (32-20).
Â
"The best part about the first half of how we played is that we took control of the game and we were able to take at least a 14 point lead," said Freeman-Jackson. "I thought we took a good defensive stance and never let them back in. We did a good job staying focused."
Â
In the second half FAMU cut the lead to one and tying the game twice before the Lady Hornets went on an 11-0 surge at the 5:12 mark. Â The Rattlers scored one final time before ASU closed out the game with a 64-49 win.
Â
Alabama State will return to the hardwood when they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on the Tigers of Savannah State at 5 pm. Live updates will be available via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook throughout the game.
