The Alabama State women's basketball team is set to host Bluefield Monday, December 15 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome for a 6 pm tip.
Â
The Lady Hornets (2-4) is coming off of a 70-50 loss to Troy and will be looking for a turn around. Last season the Lady Blues (6-4) fell to Alabama State at the Acadome, making Monday's game the second meeting between the teams. Bluefield will enter tomorrow's contest with three straight wins the last on Saturday over Salem International (83-47) at T. Edward Gymnasium in Salem, West Virginia.
Â
"This is our opportunity to turn the tables," head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "Yes we have lost the last four games, but our focus is to change our losses to wins and we are going to try everything we can to make that happen, if it's playing more aggressive on the defensive end or making baskets when we need to then that's what we are going to have to do."
Â
The Lady Blues has five players averaging double figures. The scoring charge is led by sophomore guard Shakima Wiggins (17.3), junior Tenika Jackson (12.5), seniors Hope Smith (12.1) Tasia Nolan (12.0) and Charity Harris (11.7). Nolan is leading Bluefield on the boards averaging 9.2 rebounds ppg.
Â
"Bluefield is a good solid team," Freeman-Jackson said. "They are quick and can get up and down the court. We have to be able to contain them as a team since they have so many different scorers."
Â
Alabama State's sophomore
Britney Wright holds the team down in scoring averaging 11.8 ppg, while
Jasmine Peeples leads the team in rebounding averaging 9.7 rpg. Peeples has led the team in scoring and rebounding in the last two outings for the Lady Hornets. She had 15 points and 12 rebounds against WKU and 12 points and 15 rebounds in the game versus Troy.
