Alabama State University's tennis programs will have a busy weekend of matches as they will host matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-16 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex.
Â
Jacksonville State will visit the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex Friday for a 10 a.m. match while Florida A&M will play at ASU Saturday, also at 10 a.m.
Â
The final match of the weekend will see Kennesaw State travel to Montgomery to face the tennis teams Sunday at 2 p.m. These three matches will also signal an end to the present six-match home stand for ASU.
Â
The Hornets (1-3) have been off a week and have been unable to get a lot of practice time in because of the weather in the area the past few days.
Â
"We have not gotten a lot of solid practice in because of the bad weather," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "Today we are going to try and get in a good practice with the weather being a lot nicer."
Â
Jacksonville State (0-3), Florida A&M (3-4) and Kennesaw State (1-3) will provide plenty of challenges for the young Hornets as they continue to work towards the opening of conference season.
Â
"I am very happy with where the men's team is at," Christiansz said. "They have been playing really well in doubles lately, but we still have to take care of some little details."
Â
"I want a strong finish in the singles play. We have been right there and not taking care of the little things in order to close the matches out, but I'm very excited about the position our men's team is in right now."
Â
The Lady Hornets (2-4) have been a little busier in match play than the Hornets, having played two additional matches. Jacksonville State (1-2), Florida A&M (0-1) and Kennesaw State (0-2) are in the same position as the Lady Hornets and should provide some exciting matches this weekend.
Â
"We have a little bit more depth than last year with the women's team," Christiansz said. "We have some injuries, but what I really like is the fact they are competing hard. They are very young so they are still learning."
Â
"Our doubles play has been good and like with the men's team, they have to take care of the small details and we are working on that. We need more experience and this weekend will help with that and I think down the stretch this will help us."
Â
With the lack of practice time this week, both teams are looking to be able to use three consecutive days of matches to see how much they can improve against solid competition and to continue to do the things they have been doing well.
Â
"I really want to see both teams sustain the level of intensity they have been playing with in the first few matches for three consecutive days," Christiansz said. "That will carry us into conference play in two weeks, because we will be playing consecutive days at the round ups and may play more than one match on any day. So this will give us a good indication of how focused we can be on our intensity."
