The Alabama State men's and women's tennis teams both lost to Jacksonville State Friday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
The men's team lost 7-0, while the Lady Hornets fell 6-1 in matches head tennis coach
Anuk Christiansz felt his team should have won.
"This is a match we should have won," Christiansz said. "On the men's side, we were up in doubles and should have won the point. We're so close. We need to close out these matches. Last year, this match was over in 30 minutes; they killed us. This time around, we were right in the thick of things; we just have to close it out. We have to get some of those wins so we can get confidence to steamroll into the next match."
In men's doubles, ASU fell in scores of 8-4, 8-7, and 8-6. In singles, Alabama State won the first set in three of the six matches. However, Alabama State could not get a point, underscoring Christiansz' point of being right in the mix, but needing to close the match.
In women's doubles, the number two team of
Pauline Denis and
Melissa Telfer won 8-2. The Lady Hornets fell just short of taking the doubles point, however, losing the other two matches narrowly, 8-6 and 8-5.
Irina Cvijovic won the lone point for Alabama State in number four singles, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Number one
Arantxia Wijngaarde won her first set, but not close the match in falling in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5.
"We won one of the doubles matches, and we could have won another doubles match to give us the point but again, we could not close it out," Christiansz said. "We just need to close out some of these matches."
Both Alabama State tennis teams will be back in action at home Saturday at 10 a.m. against Florida A&M.
