Jamel Waters Scores Career-High to Lead Hornets
Box Score

Jamel Waters career-high 28 points led Alabama State to a 92-86 win over Alcorn State to break the Hornets two-game losing streak and help the Hornets hang on to second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

"It's good to get another win and we have been playing pretty good here at our house," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said. "Just to get back in the winning column is good and we needed this win going into our next ball game. It is good for the guys to get a good win and start feeling good about themselves again."

The Hornets had one of their best shooting games of the season as they finished the game shooting 53.4 percent (31-58) from the field and knocked down eight of its 18 (44.4%) three point attempts. After struggling from the free throw line in their last game, ASU stepped back up and hit 22 of their 29 attempts for 76 percent.

ASU (15-9/ 9-4 SWAC) actually went 14-for-14 at the free throw line over the final five minutes of the game to hold off the Braves who once trailed by 16 points in the first half.

Waters had plenty of help on the offensive end as DeMarcus Robinson finished the game with 17 points and Maurice Strong added 12 and a team-high six rebounds.

The Hornets had another big night from its bench as the ASU reserves outscored Alcorn's bench 23-4 with Terrance LeFlore and Bobby Brown adding seven, Tony Armstrong six and Billy Ingram three.

"It was good to see some shots go down," Jackson said. "Bobby got a few early on and we really needed to get some from him and D-Rob (DeMarcus Robinson) shot well and Jamel made some so it was good to see those shots fall from the perimeter. We have been trying to force the ball inside to Maurice and Luther, but to see some shots fall especially in a timely matter was good for us."

Alcorn (10-15/7-7 SWAC) was able to get back in the game by getting to the free throw line. They shot 37 free throws in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome making 27 of those for 73 percent.

LeAntwan Luckett scored a game-high 31 points while Marquis Vance and Ocatvius Brown added 23 points each. Alcorn State shot 53.8 percent from the field (28-52), but could only hit three of their 12 three point attempts (25%) to go along with their scoring from the charity stripe.

"I don't think we played good defense at all tonight," Jackson said. "We gave up almost 90 points and that is probably the most points that have been scored on us all year."

"They stayed in the lane. We couldn't keep their guards out of the lane, but we were fortunate enough to score a couple more points than they did."

The Hornets came out scorching the nets (59.4%) in the first half as they went into the locker room with a 49-35 lead. Robinson led the Hornets scoring efforts with 14 first half points on five-of-six shooting, including knocking down three of his four three point field goals.

Waters also had double digits in the first half with 10 points as ASU shot 59.4 percent from the field. ASU hit six of its 11 three point's attempts, but only five of nine from the free throw line.

Luckett, the SWAC's second leading scorer had 12 and Brown had 11 to lead Alcorn State. The visitors also shot the ball well hitting 50 percent of its field goals, but stayed in the game by making 10 of 13 from the free throw line.

ASU will play at home again Monday, Feb. 24 when they host SWAC-leading Southern at 7:30 p.m.

"They (Southern) are very well coached and they have a good ball player at every position that is what makes them so tough," Jackson said. "They have good reserves that come in and understand their roles and has accepted those and they play well for them."
