Hornets Fall to Southern

Southern was in no mood to let Alabama State cut into their conference lead as they defeated the Hornets 87-64, handing the Hornets their first home loss of the season.

"It's extremely disappointing with the preparation we put in and the fact we had played these guys before we knew they were going to be aggressive offensively and aggressive defensively," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We had to take away their shots, especially Miller and try to do a good job on their bigs around the basket, but the effort we gave there in the first half and pretty much in the second half was embarrassing."

"It's a tough loss but to see the guys come out and not compete at the level they need to playing against a good team like Southern, that was the most disappointing thing."

Miller led Southern's offense with 23 points while Trelun Banks had 12 and Tre Lynch came off the bench to score 14.  Southern shot 60 percent from the field (34-57) and hit nine of their 19 three point attempts (47%).

When the guards were not hitting from the outside, the Jags were able to get into the lane where they outscored ASU 49-25.

"Against Alcorn on Saturday night we gave up 86 points and that's not indicative of the way we play," Jackson said.  "Then we come back tonight and give up close to that and we are not going to win ball games giving up that many points.  We are not that good offensively where we can try and match team's basket for basket."

"Give Southern and their coach credit because they took us out of things we were trying to do and I think our guys got rattled early on and lost a little bit of their confidence. "

Brandon Graham led the Hornets offense with 14 points and DeMarcus Robinson added 10.  Terrance LeFlore came off the bench to score 14.  Jamel Waters struggled from the field and finished with nine points, but did record a game-high seven assists.

Just like the first time the two teams played, ASU struggled from the field shooting 37 percent (21-57) from the field and only hit four of their 18 three point field goals.  ASU also struggled from the free throw line hitting 18 of 31 for 58 percent.

"They got into us and took away all of the things we wanted to do," Jackson said.  "There in the first half we had three starters that did not make a shot did not make a basket or a free throw.  We have to go back to work on Wednesday and try to get ready for this next ball game."

Southern imposed their will in the first half on their way to a 19-point (46-27) lead.  Miller led the way with 16 points as the Jags shot 61 percent from the field.  They also hit six of their 11 three point field goals.  Banks also had double digits for Southern by half with 10.

ASU only shot 31 percent in the opening half and Graham was the lone bright spot for ASU.  He finished the first half with 10 points while Armstrong came off the bench to score six.

Southern moves to 17-11 overall and pushes their conference record to 13-2 while the Hornets fell to 15-10 overall and now trail Southern by four and a half games as they are now 9-5 in conference action.

The Hornets will hit the road for the final time during the regular season when they travel to Houston to face Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M.  The road trip begins with ASU playing at Texas Southern Saturday, March 1 at 5 p.m.

"Hopefully we can learn from this type of loss and we can come back, go to work, and try to improve for this road trip we have coming up in Texas."
