ASU Tennis Sweeps UAPB at SWAC Round Up

The Alabama State University tennis teams opened up play today at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round Up against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.  The men were able to outlast the Golden Lions 6-1 while the Lady Hornets won a thrilling 4-3 match.

"I was happy with the way both teams came out today," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "It was good to get a win during the first day of the tournament and I want to see us carry this momentum into tomorrow's matches."

The Hornets easily won the doubles point as all three doubles teams won their matches by scores of 8-4 at one doubles and 8-0 at two doubles.  The three doubles win also went to ASU by default.

ASU (2-6/1-0 SWAC) won five of the six singles with the lone UAPB coming at one singles.  Those players picking up singles wins were Ronald Mataba, Takura Mlambo, Jarred Thompson, Stefan Vojnic and Digvijay Naruka.

"I was expecting the guys to come out and play hard today and they did," Chrisiansz said.  "I think this could be a good confidence boost for the men because they had lost a lot of close matches and today they came out ready and finished matches."

The women were in a battle from the get-go in their 4-3 win.  The Lady Hornets (3-7/1-0 SWAC) were able to pick up the doubles point as Pauline Denis and Melissa Telfer won 8-3 at two and Brankica Orlovic and Irina Cvijovic won at three.

It was good for ASU to pick up the doubles point as both teams winning three singles matches.  UAPB won at one, two and three, while ASU won singles matches four, five and six.  Those wins came from Orlovic, Cvijovic and Nathalie Lorenco.

"This was a good win for the girls," Christiansz said.  "It is good for their confidence and it was good to see the wins come from the players that won."

"The thing that makes these wins special for the women's team is these were matches we lost last year and I continue to believe we are making a dent in the conference and slowly getting there with this program."

ASU continues play in the round up tomorrow when both teams will play Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m. and the women will finish ASU action when they play Grambling State at 2 p.m.

"We have to come out tomorrow and play with confidence like we did today," Christiansz said.  "Prairie View is a good program and to win we have to come out ready to play."
