Game Notes

The Alabama State University men's basketball team has arrived in Pine Bluff, Ark., to prepare for the team's upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Due to anticipated bad weather moving into Arkansas, game time has been changed from a 7:30 p.m. start to a 4 p.m. start at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Both the Hornets and Golden Lions come into the game riding three game winning streaks, which trails on conference leader Southern who has four.  Both teams are also coming into the game coming off close wins with UAPB pulling out a 64-61 win over Alabama A&M while the Hornets won 75-70 at Mississippi Valley State.

"It seems like most of the conference games are going down to the last minutes of the games and it really has been that way for us," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said.  "Pine Bluff has gone through several close games just like we have and I am guessing it will be that way again."

ASU (14-7/8-2 SWAC) enters the game third in the conference in scoring average at 71.8 points per game.  Offensively they are led by
Jamel Waters 14.1 points per game scoring average.
DeMarcus Robinson averages 11.9 and
Bobby Brown is averaging 10.3.

ASU is also the third ranking scoring defense in the conference allowing 67.2 points per game, while allowing only a 43 percent shooting percentage and 29 percent shooting percentage on three point shooting.

UAPB (7-15/5-5 SWAC) is 10
th in the conference in scoring averaging 62.4 points per game, but that does not mean they don't have player's that can score.  Davon Haynes has a 13.3 scoring average which is ninth in the conference.  Teammate Tevin Hammond is 10
th at 12.9 points per game and Marcel Mosley as 15
th in the SWAC averaging 12.1 points per game.

"You cannot look at their record because you will not see how good a team they are," Jackson said.  "They get up and down the floor, they have bigs that give us problems every time we play them and we have got to play 40 minutes of defense to have a chance to win the game."

"We really did not do a good job Saturday night of finding Valley's shooters and we have to do a better job of that tomorrow night.  They have guards that do a great job of shooting the ball and they are even better at breaking down the defense and getting into the lane and making things happen.  Our games with Pine Bluff are always physical and it will be that way again tomorrow."

When the two teams met in Montgomery back on Jan. 13 the Hornets trailed 36-30 at halftime, but outscored UAPB 19-6 over the final 5:47 of the game to break open a tie game into the 77-64 win.

Waters tied his career-high with 27 points in the win while Brown scored 17 and Robinson added 11.  The Hornets had one of their better shooting games knocking down over 47 percent of their field goals, including shooting 41 percent from beyond the three point line.
