If the Alabama State University men's tennis team was looking to make a dent in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) they did it today with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the defending SWAC Champion, Prairie View A&M.
Â
The win for ASU (3-7/2-0 SWAC) came on the second day of the season's first SWAC Round Up which was being held in Jackson, Miss. Meanwhile the Lady Hornets, who played two matches on the day, finished losing to Prairie View A&M 4-3 and defeating Grambling State 7-0.
Â
ASU started the day winning the doubles point by taking all three doubles matches. That doubles point turned out to be a very important point as the two teams split the six singles matches with PVAMU winning at one, two and three, while ASU's four (
Adam Coyne), five (
Jarred Thompson) and six (
Stefan Vojnic) came through to hand the Hornets the win.
Â
"We got going in doubles which I had been telling them we needed to do all season," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "They played with a lot of energy out there and were ready to go today. We still have a long way to go but we are getting there."
Â
The women's match against PVAMU followed almost the exact same script, except the Lady Hornets dropped the doubles point.Â
Brankica Orlovic and
Irina Cvijovic won at three doubles for ASU, but the Lady Hornets lost at one and two doubles to drop the point.
Â
In singles play PVAMU won three singles matches at one, two and three to win their four points. ASU's Orlovic, Cvijovic and
Brianna Fairley won at four, five and six to make the match the one-point decision.
Â
In the Lady Hornets (4-8/2-1 SWAC) second match of the day, they won all seven points in the match winning all three doubles matches and then sweeping singles action.
Â
"The girls gave a great effort today," Christiansz said. "We had a chance to win the doubles points against Prairie View and if we could have done that we could have won."
Â
"Playing two matches in just a few hours is very hard and I am proud of how the girls came back after such a long and hard match against Prairie View. They were able to keep their intensity and focus against Grambling State and pick up the win. It was just a very good effort by the women."
Â
Both teams will be off until Friday, March 7 when they will host Tuskegee at 1:30 p.m. at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex.
