Montgomery has always been known as a strong advocate for tennis and this weekend Montgomery's tennis families will have an opportunity to see some exciting tennis action as Alabama State University will host the second and final 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round Up Friday and Saturday, March 28-29. The tournament will include all of the men's and women's teams from the SWAC and it will be played at three different locations.
ASU will host several matches including all of the Alabama State matches on its home courts at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex.
The city of Montgomery is providing the other two sites where several matches will be played. The O'Connor Tennis Center on Anderson Street and the always popular Lagoon Park Tennis Center, where the nationally-renowned College Blue and Gray Tournament is held every year, will be the other sites hosting Round Up matches.
The Hornets enter the tournament 5-9 overall and are second in the conference with a 2-0 record. They are one game behind current conference leader Alcorn State who enters the Round Up with a 3-0 record.
The Lady Hornets are enjoying one of their best seasons in recent memory as they have a 7-10 overall record and currently stand fourth in conference play with a 2-1 record. The seven wins for the women's program are the most single-season wins for the program in over five years.
Southern and Jackson State lead the women's standings with identical 4-0 conference records while Prairie View A&M is one game in front of the Lady Hornets with a 3-1 record.
"I think for both teams to do well we have to come out with a strong showing in doubles," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "I think with that confidence it will carry over to singles and I think we can do really well. We have to play with a lot of confidence; we have to play to win and not play defensive and I think that will take us over the top."
The top teams coming out of the round up will be named as the regular season champions and will be the top seeds in next month's SWAC Tournament which will be played in New Orleans.
