The men's match was a back and forth affair through both doubles and singles play.  JSU actually was able to take the doubles points with an 8-6 win at two doubles after each team had one win to their credit.
 
Singles play was the same way as the match came down to the action at two singles as each team had three points.  JSU was able to win the three-set game to win the match and hand ASU its first conference defeat.
 
JSU's women showed why they came into the match undefeated as they beat the Lady Hornets 4-0.
 
The Hornets defeated AAMU to get going back in the right direction with a 4-0 win over the Bulldogs.  ASU won the doubles points and then was able to get singles wins from Jarred Thompson, Digivijay Naruka and Roderick Williams for the final three points.
 
"It was good to get a win, but we wanted to win both matches," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "The JSU match was really tough because we had four guys who were sick with the flu and we had to move some guys around and that hurt us.  We are not going to take anything away from JSU because they came in here and won two big games, one in doubles and one in singles, to get the win.  I thought both teams competed hard and we had our chances to win, but JSU just did a better job."
 
"To come back right after a tough emotional loss and get a win over AAMU was a solid plus for the men.  I actually sent all the sick players back to the dorm to rest because they just weren't feeling good.  Today shows we are still a program that has a ways to go and even though I know we are better than last year if we come to a match not ready to play we can get beat."
 
The Lady Hornets also defeated the Lady Bulldogs 4-0 buoyed by the doubles points and wins in singles matches from Melissa Telfer, Irina Cvijovic and Brankkica Orlovic for the singles points.
 
"Today's match shows two things for the women's program, it shows how far we have come, but it also shows how far we have to go," Christiansz said.  "JSU is one of the top teams in the conference, but I thought our girls competed hard and had some chances, but just could not close out some of the games.  They were able to come back and pick up a win over AAMU which is hard to do when you play back-to-back matches within minutes of each other.  Again, they are getting better but we must continue to work hard to improve."
 
ASU moves to 6-10 overall and 3-1 in conference action while the Lady Hornets move to 8-12 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
 
ASU will complete their play in the Round Up Sunday, March 30 when they host Alcorn State at 9 a.m. at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex.
