With all of the rain the city of Montgomery experienced over the end of the week, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round Up had to finish its matches today and the Hornets ended their portion of the round up hosting Alcorn State.
Â
In men's action, sickness again hurt the Hornets as number one singles player
Dylan Cleary did not even make it to the courts and number three
Adam Coyne had to retire in the first set. The game against the SWAC's top team was made even harder before the match started.
Â
"The men played without Dylan who is our number one as he continues to fight the flu," Head Coach Anuk Chrisitansz said. "Adam (Coyne) tried to go but had to retire in the first set due to fighting the sickness so we really couldn't get going the way we wanted. Alcorn went undefeated in the conference so that tells you how good they are and to not be able to play them at full strength really hurt our chances."
Â
"Alcorn came out and really took it to us and played like they wanted to go undefeated so you have to take your hat to the way they played. They are a very good team."
Â
Alcorn did win the doubles point as the Hornets managed to keep it close, but went down early in singles play 2-0 when Coyne retired due to sickness. From there it was just too much for the Hornets to come back from as Alcorn defeated ASU 4-0.
Â
The Lady Hornets won the doubles point, but was unable to capitalize on the early success in falling 4-1 to the Lady Braves.
Â
"Our women had their chances and after winning the doubles point we had the momentum," Christiansz said. "When we got to singles we just did not play well. We had our chances as most of the singles matches were close but we just could not finish. It has been a problem all year so we now need to continue to work on finishing matches and maybe by the time the tournament gets here we will be ready."
Â
ASU finishes 3-2 in the conference and is now 6-12 overall. The Lady Hornets are 3-4 in SWAC play and 8-13 overall.
Â
ASU will now turn its attention towards the SWAC Tournament which will be April 25-27 in New Orleans, La. ASU does have a couple of matches scheduled before the start of the tournament. They are scheduled to face Southern Mississippi in Mobile April 5 at 12:30 p.m.
