Box Score

Jamel Waters basket with .6 seconds left on the clock gave Alabama State a come-from-behind 68-66 win over Grambling and kept the Hornets dream alive of picking up the second seed in the upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament.

"We have had Jamel in that spot at least three or four times this year, the last time at A&M with the score tied and he took a three," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said. "We talked with him about lets go to the basket and with both teams in double bonus if you get to the basket you may get a foul and then you put pressure on the guy because he doesn't want to foul and you may get off a good clean look and tonight he got in the lane and was able to get a good shot off and we were happy to see it go through."

ASU (17-11/11-6) trailed Grambling 63-53 after GSU's Terry Rose hit a three point basket with 3:40 left in the game. From that point on, the Hornets outscored the Tigers 13-1 with Waters' basket completing the comeback.

"We came out in the second half and talked about playing with a lot of energy and we couldn't get anything going and they started to make shots and gain confidence and it seemed like we were losing our," Jackson said. "They got the lead up to double figures and it seemed we were just spinning our wheels and we needed to change the game so we started to press, which we had tried earlier but it wasn't working. The second time we tried it we started getting our hands on the ball and coming up with some steals."

DeMarcus Robinson led a trio of Hornets in double figures with a game-high 19 points. Waters finished with 13 and Billy Ingram came off the bench to add 12, and it was Ingram's efforts down the stretch that got the Hornets going as he not only scored, but came up with three steals.

"Billy came in and did a tremendous job offensively as well as defensively," Jackson said. "He got his hands on a lot of loose balls, he was on the floor trying to make things happen and that's the type of effort we have to get from all of our kids. I thought he did an outstanding job sparking us, making shots and telling the guys to hey, let's go."

Other than winning the game the Hornets struggled only shooting 43 percent from the field and that includes 28 percent from beyond the three point line, and the big problem came at the free throw line where ASU only hit 11 of their 26 attempts for 42 percent.

Grambling (4-22/3-13 SWAC) shot 50 percent from the field and hit seven of its 17 three point attempts for 41 percent, but like ASU, they struggled from the free throw line hitting 11 of their 21 attempts for 52 percent.

Antwan Scott led the Tigers with 18 points and Chandler Thomas added 17 while A'Torri Shine chipped in with 12. Thomas completed a double-double for GSU with a game-high 12 rebounds.

ASU did outrebound GSU 39-34 with Maurice Strong grabbing 10 boards while scoring eight points. Waters completed another solid all-around game with a game-high seven assists and three steals.

ASU had built a 20-9 lead after a Robinson basket with 9:28 left in the first half, but Grambling went on to outscore the Hornets 23-16 over the final nine minutes to cut the lead to 36-32 going into the half.

"I thought we got out and made some shots and pushed the lead up some and then we just started going through the motions," Jackson said. "Then they started making shots after missing some shots early on and we came in at halftime only up four."

Grambling came into the game third in the SWAC averaging 6.3 three point field goals per half, and they used that shooting to get back into the game as the Tigers hit four in the opening half. Scott made two of those as he had a team-high 11 points in the opening half while GSU shot 42 percent from the field.

Robinson had 14 points in the opening half and ASU shot 46 percent from the field, but struggled from the free throw line only connecting on five of their 10 attempts.

ASU will end the regular season when they host Jackson State Saturday, March 8 at 5 p.m.
