HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Alabama State's tennis teams traveled up the road to Huntsville to face rival Alabama A&M in their final road game of the season. It was a road game which saw both programs pick up wins as they looked to gain momentum heading into the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament in two weeks.
The men ran their record to 7-11 with a 7-0 win over the Bulldogs. After grabbing the doubles point, the Hornets finished the match with quick wins at two and three singles before finishing off the shutout victory. The singles wins came from
Dylan Cleary,
Ronald Mataba,
Adam Coyne and
Stefan Vojnic.
"You could tell we were rusty from the long layoff," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "It was good to see Dylan fight through and win a tough match at one and Ronald was pushed at two singles, but it was good to get back out on the court with some competition. It was good to see us pick up a win and I would like to see us continue to build some momentum as we get closer to the conference tournament."
The Lady Hornets continued to add to their wins this season with a 7-0 win over the Lady Bulldogs. After taking the doubles point, ASU won all of the singles matches with wins coming from
Arantxia Wijngaarde,
Pauline Denis,
Melissa Telfer, Irina Cijovic, and
Nathalie Lorenco. The win pushed the Lady Hornets season record to 9-13.
"The women were a little rusty just like the men," Chrisitansz said. "Again it is good to pick up a win and we need to work on our consistency but we have a ways to go. It is also exciting to see how far the women have come. Our first year here they won one game, and pushed that to six last season and have added to that this year, so even though we have a ways to go we have come a long way from where we were at."
ASU will host another Huntsville team when Alabama-Huntsville visits the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex on Wednesday April 16. The match will be Senior Day for three ASU seniors;
Dylan Cleary from the men's team and
Pauline Denis and
Melissa Telfer from the women's team. The matches are set to begin at 1 p.m.
