Box Score Â
Alabama State University started the 2014 season on the road against 16th-ranked Sam Houston State and the Bearkats were able to stop ASU 51-20 in the season opener.
Â
"It was not a very good performance by our defense," Head Coach
Reggie Barlow said. "We prided ourselves last year on three and outs and tonight we didn't get off the field. We didn't make tackles, we were very bad on the perimeter in making tackles and we knew this was a team that would cut you on the edge and obviously we didn't do a good job of coaching them up."
Â
Daniel Duhart completed 17 of his 32 pass attempts for 259 yards and two scores.Â
DeMario Bell had career highs in yards receiving with 134 and in a career-long 69 yard scoring pass.
Â
Malcolm Cyrus had a strong all-around game with 83 yards rushing and 49 yards receiving for 132 total yards. In his first collegiate action as a kicker,
Preston Clark connected on both of his extra points, both of his field goals and averaged 36.4 yards per punt with two of those downed inside the 20.
Â
ASU finished with 402 total yards rushing for 141 and passing for 261. Even with that many yards there were too many chances the Hornets had they did not take advantage of.
Â
"We had some chances but offensively we were not as good as we would like to be on third down," Barlow said.
Â
After going three and out in their first possession, the Bearkats scored on six consecutive possessions to lead 38-10 after the first half of action.
Â
Trailing 14-0 the Hornets scored on a six yard pass from Duhart to
Jamir Hannah to cut the lead to 14-7. It was Hannah's first collegiate touchdown reception.
Â
The Hornets offense had 220 total yards in the first half, but an interception on a tipped pass and coming up short on a fourth and one play inside the 10 hurt the Hornets chances of cutting into the lead the Bearkats were building. ASU also had six in-opportune penalties that hurt drives and also had two pass interference calls that helped keep SHSU drives going.
Â
"We knew they were a good team and I would have liked to have seen us tackle better," Barlow said. "No matter who you are playing you have to tackle. We can't give up that many big plays. This game here was a great opportunity to see where we are at personnel wise and there are some things we have to change."
Â
ASU will host Tennessee State Saturday, Sept. 6 at New Hornet Stadium in the Inaugural Classic. The game will be shown live on ASPIRE TV and is set to kick off at 4 p.m.
