Five-set drama: Volleyball takes Prairie View A&M to the limit

Box Score

It took two hours and 16 minutes and was played about as evenly as a volleyball match could be played.

But, in the end, the Alabama State women's volleyball team lost a heartbreaker at Prairie View A&M Thursday night (25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-17) in a nonconference match.

The match played out like a see-saw with the teams trading off points throughout the match.  The Lady Hornets rallied to take the opening set only to see the Lady Panthers answer back.  ASU powered through for a an exhilarating third set win and then had to regroup after seeing Prairie View make adjustments to take the fourth set.

In the deciding set, the Lady Hornets (4-14) put up a defensive wall on three straight sequences to grab a 5-3 advantage.  Myla Marshall put down a block and then Amber Bennett followed up with two more blocks in succession.

Rachel Smith was huge down the stretch, coming up with three big kills in a short span to give ASU a little breathing room at 11-7.  Marshall threw down a spike to make it 14-11 and ASU was sensing victory.  But PVAMU would not fold as it got a match point off its' own at 15-14 before Smith knocked down a kill to lock at 15.

The Panthers' Candyce Alexander put down a kill and ASU committed an attack error to give PVAMU a 17-15 set win and 3-2 sets victory.

The match provided plenty of career and season highs for the Lady Hornets.  Among them were Briana Dorsey (career-high 10 kills and tied a career-high with five blocks), Brooke Beasley (season-high 25 assists), Rachel Smith (season-high 13 kills), Lorena Rosario (season-high eight kills) and Erika Thompson (season-high 23 digs).

Smith also had nine digs, Jones added 22 assists and nine digs while Bennett finished with 11 kills and five blocks.

In the first set, ASU trailed 21-17 and rallied back to take the set 25-22.  After the Panthers' Chandler Bacon committed a service ace, Thompson got hot behind the service line by firing off six consecutive points for ASU.

Within the rally, Thompson rang up two aces.  PVAMU had a ball-handling error and an attack error to tie it up at 21 all.  Rosario swung for a kill, Smith found some open floor space on a feed from Beasley to make it 24-22 before Dorsey finished it out with a boom.

Bennett had a strong set, collecting four kills against just one error on eight total attacks.  Beasley worked diligently by assisting on seven of the Lady Hornets' 12 helpers in the set.

The second set stayed tight with the teams exchanging points in a back-and-forth pace.  Neither team picked up more than a three-point lead until PVAMU took a 22-18 advantage on an ASU ball-handling error.  Marshall came back with a kill and an assisted block teaming with Dorsey, but the Panthers held 25-20.

In the third set, ASU ran out to a 4-1 start behind an Ellyn Jones ace and kills by Chelsey Scott and Rosario.  The Lady Hornets pushed the lead to 10-4 forcing a PVAMU timeout.

The Panthers answered back to take an 11-10 lead.

But, Alabama State wasn't done.  ASU reclaimed the lead.  Dorsey timed her jump just right to pick up another ASU kill, forcing a Prairie View timeout.

Marshall faked going up to make a play on the ball, opening up Scott to come up with a kill with the assist coming from Jones to make it 23-20 ASU.  Scott closed out the set with an emphatic block to give ASU the set 25-21.

In the fourth set, the Panthers took an early lead before ASU fought back to tie it at 15.  PVAMU took the fourth set 25-20 punctuated by a Candyce Alexander kill to push it to a five-set match.

Next, Alabama State will play at Texas Southern on Friday at 7 p.m.
