Luther Page leads the SWAC
in field goal percentageGame Notes
The Alabama State University men's basketball team will play the final game of a three-game road swing when they face rival Alabama A&M Saturday Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. at the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.Â
A full house is expected as the two teams vie to stay at or near the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings. The Hornets, winners of five consecutive games, enter the game 8-5 overall, but have a half-game lead over Texas Southern at the top of the conference with a 4-0 record.
Â
AAMU (4-10/3-1 SWAC) are not playing too shabby themselves. They are winners of three consecutive games and are only one game behind the Hornets in the conference standings.
Â
"It's Alabama State and Alabama A&M and that is all you really have to say," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "I don't care if you're playing volleyball, baseball, football, tennis it's going to be a competitive ball game.  I know Coach Hayes will have his guys ready to play and we have to get prepared to play because he has a really good team and we like to thing we are a decent ball club in our own right. So it's going to be an exciting ball game."
Â
It seems in every SWAC game the Hornets have played so far they have faced one of the conference's top scorers and will do so again as reigning SWAC Player of the Week Ladarius Tabb leads AAMU and is fourth in the SWAC in scoring at 14.2 points per game. He also leads AAMU in FG percentage (.453) and in steals with 16.
Â
While the Bulldogs are eighth in the conference in scoring (58.1 ppg) they are one of the top defensive teams in the league only giving up 67.9 points per game. Leading there defensive efforts are junior Nicholas West who is the SWAC's top rebounder at 7.9 per game to go with his 12.8 points per game average.
Â
AAMU's point guard Rakiya Battle is battling ASU's
Jamel Waters for the league lead in assists, as he enters the game averaging 5.3 per game.
Â
While the Hornets have struggled on both ends of the court at times this season, they continue to lead the league in 11 different categories, ranging from points per game to assist-to-turnover ratio to rebounding margin.
Â
While no ASU player is among the top 10 in scoring they do have a balanced attack led by
Jamel Waters' 12 points per game.Â
Maurice Strong has been as consistent on the offensive end as anyone on the team the past few weeks and is averaging 11 points per game to go along with his team-leading 7.2 rebounds per game.
Â
DeMarcus Robinson is averaging 10.9 points per game while
Bobby Brown (9.7),
Luther Page (9.4) and
Wendell Lewis (8.9) have been very consistent for ASU.
Â
It's easy to see why the Hornets are leading the SWAC in points scored as they have to top four field goal percentage shooters in the conference. Page leads the league hitting over 60 percent of his field goals and Strong (.517) is second, Robinson (.482) is third and Lewis (.476) is fourth. For good measure Waters is 10
th shooting over 43 percent from the field.
Â
The Hornets also have the top three shooters in three point field goal percentage. Freshman
Steve Rogers leads the pack off the bench hitting 52 percent of his treys while Robinson (.444) is second and Brown (.438) is third. Again
Jamel Waters sneaks in at eighth in the conference hitting .348.
Â
The game will follow the Lady Hornets and Lady Bulldogs who are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. Like the men, the women enter the game in first place in the conference and are looking to maintain that status against AAMU.

The game can be heard live on HornetVision at bamastatesports.com.
