Tennis Teams Fall at Mississippi State

Alabama State's tennis teams took to the road this weekend to begin the 2015 season at Southeastern Conference member Mississippi State.

The men's team fell to the 21st-ranked Bulldogs 4-0 as MSU started the match winning the doubles point, but not without a fight from the Hornets.  MSU won at one doubles 6-0, but at two doubles Adam Coyne and Ronald Mataba pushed the Bulldogs team of Mate Cutura and Tassilo Schmid to a 6-4 finish.

MSU finished the match winning at five, six and one singles.

The Lady Hornets fell 7-0 to MSU, as the Lady Bulldogs were able to pull in the doubles points with a closer than expected sweep.  The number one team of Marine Cartier and Arantaxia Wijingaarde pushed the one team of MSU to a 7-5 final score and at two doubles, ASU's returning All-SWAC duo of Irina Cvijovic and Brankica Orlovic pushed MSU before falling  6-3.

"This was a very good test for our teams to start out the season," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "I thought we competed hard and had several chances to win a set, especially in doubles play on both teams.  We have to use this to get better this week before we face another tough match in Georgia Southern."

"We had a lot of the same problems as last season when we had a chance to close out a game we couldn't do it.  So we are going to work on that in practice this week as well, but I thought for the first match and against this type of competition we did a lot of things well.  I continue to be excited about these teams as we work our way on through the season."

Both teams will jump back into action Sunday, Jan. 25 when they travel to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern.  The matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
