Alabama State's tennis teams hit the road for the second matches of the season and each fell by identical 6-1 scores.
Â
In men's action the Eagles took the doubles point winning all three doubles matches. The Hornets played tough in doubles dropping all three by 6-2 scores.
Â
ASU (0-2) dropped three singles matches to complete the day, but not before
Takura Mlambo picked up a win at two singles 6-2, 6-2.Â
Ronald Mataba played a tough singles match before falling 6-7 (4), 2-6 and
Karlo Skvorc also lost a hard fought match 3-6, 1-6.
Â
In women's action the Eagles once again took the doubles point with wins at two and three. The Lady Hornets (0-2) made it interesting as the one doubles team of
Marine Cartier and
Arantxia Wijingaarde won 7-6, but were unable to pick up another win at two or three doubles to earn the point.
Â
In singles action GSU was able to clinch the victory with five wins, but ASU's Cartier picked up a win at two singles 6-1, 7-5 for the Hornets lone point.
Â
"I thought both the men and women really competed hard," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "We need a little more depth, but with it being this early in the season we just need to play matches. I would like to play two matches over the weekend but we just played one."
Â
"It was good to see "Tak" (Mlambo) and Marine pick up wins and it was Marine's first collegiate win. We really had several chances in other matches, but just could not get the win. You can tell we are still a young team and we are starting to pick up wins where when we first got here we had no chances of winning. So if we keep competing and working hard we are going to be ok."
Â
The Lady Hornets will be back in action Friday, Jan. 30 when they host Troy University at 2 p.m. Both teams will be in Mobile to face South Alabama Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.
