The Alabama State women's basketball team went back to work on the court in preparation for its annual Texas road swing as they compete against Texas Southern at the HPE Arena in Houston, Texas for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.Â
Â
The Lady Hornets have been working on defense in order to prepare for the number one seed in the conference (Texas Southern, 6-1) after a tough 53-49 loss to Southern University this past Monday night at the Dome. This match between Texas Southern and ASU is going to be another tough match up for ASU.
Â
"Playing on the road is always tough," said head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson. "We know that Texas Southern is an aggressive and competitive team like Southern. They play hard and we will have to do the same thing if we want to get the win. We have to make sure that we keep control of the ball. We are trying to teach our guards to be on the ball (getting in for the rebounds) and don't allow a second chance opportunities."
Â
Scoring is still led by two-time Player of the Week
Britney Wright, who is averaging 15.1 ppg and 6.7 rebounds per contest, while junior
Jasmine Peeples is next on the team in scoring averaging 10.6 ppg. Peeples leads the team in rebounds per game with 9.6.
Â
The Lady Tigers are led in scoring and rebounding by Alexus Johnson, who is averaging 13.1 ppg and 7.5 rpg.
Â
The Lady Hornets have a 45-23 series advantage over the Lady Tigers.   In the Freeman-Jackson era Bama State leads the series 25-9. Last season ASU and Texas Southern split with TSU defeating Alabama State 83-74 in overtime at the Dome and ASU winning their fifth straight win of 65-57 at the HP&E Arena.
