ASU comes up aces in win against Jackson St.


MONTGOMERY, ALA.  – The Alabama State women's volleyball team wheeled around with a spread attack and set a new team season high with eight aces as the Lady Hornets outlasted Jackson State 3-1 (27-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-16) Friday night at Lockhart Gymnasium. 

It marks ASU's 19th win in their past 20 matches against SWAC opponents during the regular season for the two-time defending SWAC Champions.
   
A key moment came in the third set.  With ASU leading 20-14, JSU rallied to win six of the following seven points to get within 21-20 after a kill by Tajia Thomas.

However, the Lady Hornets had the answer with four consecutive points to close out the set and take a 2-1 sets lead. 

With Scout Wonsang at the service line, she helped win the last three points on a pair of JSU attack errors and a kill by Myla Marshall to seal it. 

Alabama State (7-12, 3-1 SWAC) had three players with double-digit kills, three others who reached double figures in assists and another three with at least seven digs. 

Lorena Rosario and Briana Dorsey set the tone as each reached new season-highs with 11 kills apiece while Amber Bennett totaled 10 kills to mark the fifth time this season with double-digit kills. 

Riley MacDonald led the passers with 17 assists, Jamie Coleman netted a career-high 14 assists and Kori Kutsch chipped in with 11 assists to mark her 14th straight match with double-digit totals in that category.

As for the aces, MacDonald led with three aces, Rosario had two while Coleman, Kutsch and Wonsang each contributed with one apiece. 

Wonsang also had a team-high 18 digs. 

Jackson State (1-19, 1-1 SWAC) was led by Jenni Siddiqui, who had 10 kills, 22 assists and six digs. 

Next, the Lady Hornets will hit the road to Jackson, Miss. to take part in the SWAC Round-Up against the five opponents from the West Division beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. versus Southern. 

The team will also play Grambling State at 3 p.m. followed by Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, ASU takes on Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m. and Texas Southern at 5 p.m.
