Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lady Hornets roll past SC State

ORANGEBURG, SC  – Dig.  Set.  Kill. Repeat.

The Alabama State women's volleyball team kept their winning streak rolling along as the Lady Hornets took care of business at South Carolina State with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-20) win on Tuesday night in a nonconference match between SWAC and MEAC schools at Dukes Gymnasium.

ASU (13-12) was unfazed by the quick turnaround after coming back to Montgomery past midnight Sunday morning on the heels of a 5-0 romp through the SWAC Round-Up in Jackson, Miss.

Alabama State extended their winning streak to seven, and in the process, reached their high water mark of the season by going over the .500 mark for the first time.

It was a typical ASU spread attack as five players accounted for at least five kills, two others tallied double-digits in assists and three players had at least six digs.

The team hit .312 for the match with 35 kills against just 10 errors on 80 total attacks.

The Lady Hornets trailed only briefly before the mid-way point of the third set and stayed composed through any viable SCSU threats.

In the first set, Jamie Coleman and Rachel Smith covered a lot of ground on the back line, Myla Marshall and Amber Bennett put up a net presence to energize the squad and Chelsey Scott came alive down the stretch to put it away.

In the second set, Tiara Kelley had four of her seven kills and Smith put down three of her seven kills in the set.

ASU hit a match-high .375 for the set.

Marshall was dominant in the third set, coming up with seven kills on 10 total attacks in the set alone.  She finished with eight kills on a .636 hitting percentage.

Kori Kutsch had 16 assists while Riley MacDonald added 14 assists.

Jamie Coleman led the back line defense with 13 digs, Scout Wonsang added eight digs and three aces while Smith collected six digs.

Briana Dorsey and Scott each had five kills apiece.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-15) were led by Brianna Dafney and Kirby Anderson, who had 12 and eight kills.

Next, ASU will play Wednesday at Savannah State.

First set is scheduled for 6 p.m.
