Lady Hornets falter in second half at Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, AR.  – The Alabama State women's soccer team couldn't quite find their offensive fluidity as the team concluded its conference road trip with a 2-1 defeat to SWAC opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at Pumphrey Stadium.

The Lady Hornets (2-8-1, 2-1 SWAC) were fraught with having to play from behind including most of the second half.

The Golden Lions (4-6, 3-1 SWAC) held an advantage in the early part of the match with possession.

It paid off as UAPB took the initial lead in the 22nd minute on a goal off the foot of Rebecca Holmes, who received a pass from Maria Del Carmen Rios Jean.

ASU responded by picking up the tempo in the latter part of the first half.

The Lady Hornets became more aggressive and locked the score at 1-1 when Emily Fleming's pass from center set up a streaking Shelbi Vienna-Hallam, who raced down the near side of the field and lofted it high over Pine Bluff goalkeeper Makayla Cowles' head and into the corner of the net.

It marked Vienna-Hallam's first goal of the season and eighth of her ASU career.

After the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1, UAPB retook the lead when freshman Karissa Fenwick scored the winner inside the box on a feed from Holmes in the 61st minute.

The Golden Lions held a 15-11 shots advantage and 8-6 for shots on goals.

The match featured the conference's top two goalkeepers in terms of saves.

ASU goalkeeper Gianna Guyot made six saves to give her a conference-leading 80 saves on the season.

Cowles made five saves and has 78 on the 2015 campaign.

Pine Bluff, looking much more improved this season, picked up their third straight SWAC win after beating Alabama A&M 5-0 on Friday and Texas Southern 1-0 just three days earlier.

ASU returns home to play Southern on Friday at 7 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex.
