ITTA BENA, Miss.  – The Alabama State volleyball team trailed just one time in a set all match and widened their margin of victories in the successive second and third sets as the Lady Hornets swept host Mississippi Valley State 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-14) on Friday night to win for the 11
th time in their past 12 matches.Â
The Lady Hornets (17-13, 5-2 SWAC) had their first set win in doubt when it trailed 16-15 after the Devilettes had taken 10 of the prior 13 points capped by a duel block off the hands of Liyah Davis and Cynthia Richardson.
But, ASU would turn it around by winning 10 of the final 15 points in the set marked by
Rachel Smith, who had four of her 10 kills during the stretch.Â
Alabama State stayed efficient all game, hitting .379, .429 and .281 in each set for their fifth-highest team hitting percentage of the season—a .360.Â
Myla Marshall also co-shared the team lead in kills with 10,
Kori Kutsch added 38 assists and
Scout Wonsang led the defensive back unit with 15 digs.Â
Amber Bennett had eight kills and a team-high five blocks.Â
Tiara Kelley picked up four kills to go over 600 in her career.Â
The senior now has 603 career kills in two and a half seasons at ASU.Â
Richardson had nine kills to lead Mississippi Valley State (3-29, 0-8 SWAC).Â
Next, ASU will play at Alcorn State on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the final match of the regular season.Â
