Jamel Waters leads ASU
in scoring, rebounding,
assists and stealsDESTIN, Fla. – The Alabama State University men's basketball team has arrived in Florida to complete play in the 2015 Emerald Coast Classic. The Hornets started the Classic with road games at Virginia Tech, Alabama-Birmingham and Mercer. Now the teams will come together and finish the Classic on the campus of Northwest Florida State College.Â
The Hornets have two games remaining and will face Chattanooga (3-1) Friday at 11 a.m. Depending on a whether ASU wins or loses they will face either Chicago State or Jacksonville State in Saturday's finale.
Â
"It certainly doesn't get any easier with Chattanooga," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "When you watch them on film you see how well coached they are. They are a veteran ball club and play hard on both ends of the court."
Â
"We will once again be out sized at every position, but we have been working in practice on things to combat that. We have to get better defensively and we have to hit the boards harder than we have been. Our guard is one of our leading rebounders and when that happens it usually is not a good thing."
Â
ASU (1-2) has played three competitive games and has one win in those three games; their toughest opponent may actually be Chattanooga who enters the game with wins over Illinois and Georgia.
Â
The Mocs have four players averaging double digits as senior Casey Jones, a returning all-conference performer, leads the team averaging 13.3 points and a team-high seven rebounds per game.
Â
Johnathan Burroughs-Cook comes off the bench for Chattanooga and averages 11.3 points per game. The other double digit scorers are Greg Pryor (10.8) and Justin Tuoyo (10.3).
Â
Jamel Waters, who only needs 11 points to become the program's 25
th leading scorer, leads a group of three Hornets averaging over 10 points per game with 15.3.Â
Torloft Thomas (13.0) and
Bobby Brown (10.0) are the other two.
Â
Waters and Chidoze Omile led the Hornets in rebounding averaging 3.7 per game. Waters, as he has done since his freshman season, leads the team in assists and steals.
Â
"It will be another good test to see how we are progressing towards the start of the conference season in a few weeks," Jackson said. "We still have a long way to go and playing teams like Chattanooga will help us become a better team in the future."
Â
The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. tip. Live stats will be available during the game. Check with Game Day Central Friday morning for more game information.
