and three blocksEVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Hornets faced another good team and another good team that just didn't seem to miss in an 88-56 loss at Evansville. The Purple Aces shot 67 percent from the field for the game; 79 percent in the first 20 minutes and 57 percent in the second half. Evansville hit their first five shots from the field and jumped out to a 10-0 lead before
Jamel Waters got the Hornets on the board with a three after almost four minutes had run off the clock.
Â
It didn't get any better as Evansville (6-1) went on to hit 14 of its first 18 shots and that includes hitting their first five three pointers. Evansville led 35-13 by that point and the Hornets were struggling to get anything going on either end of the court.
Â
ASU (2-4) finished the game shooting 33 percent from the field and 37 percent from beyond the three point line. ASU was not any better at the free throw line only connecting on seven of its 13 attempts.
Â
"It was just one of those games," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "They couldn't miss and we couldn't throw it in the ocean. We didn't help our cause any with our defense. They got a lot of easy shots around the basket and we couldn't seem to make them work very hard for shots."
Â
Corvon Butler had a career-high 13 points for ASU and was the only Hornet to reach double-digits. Waters finished with eight and
Torloft Thomas had seven.
Â
Robert Ojeah had a career-high with six points and chipped in with four rebounds. The Hornets were out rebounded 37-29 with
Bobby Brown coming off the bench to pick up a team-high five boards.
Â
"We have to get more production on offense," Jackson added. "We did not do a good job of getting into our offense and wound up taking bad shots. We didn't move at all on the offensive end, or the defensive end for that matter. We have a lot of work to do before we play Thursday night."
Â
D.J. Balentine came into the game as Evansville's leading scorer and did nothing to hurt his 21 point average tonight as he finished with a game-high 26 points. Balentine was the main player leading the way knocking down his first six shots and that includes his first four three-point field goal attempts.
Â
Egidiju Mockevicius had a double-double for the Purple Aces with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Adam Wing scored 12 points and Jaylon Brown added 10.
Â
The Purple Aces shot an incredible 79 percent in the opening 20 minutes en route to their 55-22 lead. Balentine had 20 and Mockevicius added 10. ASU only shot 24 percent with Butler's nine points off the bench leading ASU.
Â
"We have played an extremely tough pre-conference schedule and Evansville showed why they have only lost one game," Jackson said. "They will have a very good season with their combination of guard play and height in the post. We just did nothing on defense to make them work for anything tonight. We have to get better."
Â
The Hornets will host their first game of the season when long-time, cross-time rival Auburn-Montgomery comes to Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The two teams will play Thursday, Dec. 3 with the tip scheduled for 8 p.m. The game is part of a double-header with the Lady Hornets as they will open the day with a 6 p.m. game against South Alabama.
