Hornets Continue Road Trip

Game Notes

ELON, N.C. – The Alabama State University men's basketball team has made its way into the eastern part of the country for three pre-holiday games that will take place in North and South Carolina.

The three-game trek will begin with a 6 p.m. game Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Elon University which is located in Elon, N.C.  Following that game, the Hornets will travel on further east to Conway, S.C. where they will face Coastal Carolina on Dec. 20.  The eight-day trip will end Dec. 22 when ASU comes back through Rock Hill, S.C. and will play Winthrop University.

"This is going to be a long road trip that will be a great test for our team," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We are still trying to improve on a lot of areas and these three teams will provide us with great competition.  We will have to be ready against all three of them."

The (4-4) Hornets enter the road trip coming off back-to-back wins for the first time this season; an 80-78 home win over Auburn Montgomery and a road victory at Jacksonville State (63-60).

Jamel Waters, the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Week, leads ASU averaging almost 15 points per game.  While Waters is playing shooting guard this season that has not hampered his ability to disperse the basketball.  He is currently third in the conference averaging 4.5 assist per game.

Waters is the only Hornets averaging in double digits, but there are several Hornets that are contributing on the offensive end of the court.  Bobby Brown (9.8) and Torloft Thomas (9.5) are close to double digit scorers and can break loose at any time.

Corvon Butler has been coming off the bench and providing solid minutes for the Hornets.  He is averaging 8.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.  The coaching staff has been waiting for Steve Rogers to break out of his shooting slump and hopefully he did that at Jacksonville State.  In the second half alone Rogers knocked down four of seven three point attempts and finished with a season-high 16 points.

Elon (6-3), like the Hornets, enters the contest on a two-game winning streak.  The Phoenix has a patient offense that is averaging 79 points per game.  They only have two players averaging double digits with Tanner Samson averaging 14.9 points and Dainan Swoopes coming off the bench to average 12.5 points per game.

Luke Eddy is the team leader in assists averaging 5.3 per game and Christian Hairston comes off the bench to lead the team in rebounding averaging 5.6 per game.

"Elon is going to be a lot like us," Jackson added.  "They have a couple of bigs we will have to pay attention to, but they are guard oriented.  Their guards are a little bigger than our guards so we will need to keep them in front of us and do a better job than we have been doing of keeping them out of the lane."

The game can be listened to live.  Check Game Day Central which will be available tomorrow at bamastatesports.com.
