CONWAY, S.C. – The men's basketball team at Alabama State has arrived in Conway for a date with Coastal Carolina. The two teams will play Sunday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
Â
CCU is coached by former Auburn head man Cliff Ellis who has been at the Big South member school for nine years. CCU enters the game 6-5 overall and is coming off a season which saw them win the Big South with a 24-10 record and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament where they lost in the second round to eventual national runner up Wisconsin.
Â
"We are facing a talented and deep team," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "They have some talented guards and they all average double digits. They are quick, get the ball up the court and try to take the defender off the dribble. We have our work cut out for us trying to stay in front of them."
Â
Elijah Wilson (14.5) is their leading scorer. Shivaughn Wiggins (12.6), Badou Diagne (12.2) and Jaylen Shaw (10.6) join Wilson in double digit scoring.
Â
Diagne averages 7.3 rebounds per game to lead the Chanticleers while Jaylen Shaw leads the team in assists and Colton St Cyr-Ray is the team's leader in steals with 13.
Â
The Hornets (4-5) are looking to get back into the win column after falling at Elon last Wednesday.
Jamel Waters (14.4) continue to lead the team in scoring and is only 33 points away from moving into 19
th place on the ASU all-time scoring list.
Â
Tony Armstrong saw his first action of the season at Elon and came away with 12 points and seven rebounds. The Hornets will need more of that type of play from him as the season progresses.
Â
Corvon Butler is coming off the best outing of his ASU career. He had career-highs in both points (18) and rebounds (13) against the Phoenix.
Â
While Waters is the only regular scoring in double digits, Butler (9.4),
Torloft Thomas (9.3) and
Bobby Brown (8.7) continue to be scoring threats and along with a seasoned-Armstrong, the Hornets could become a stronger scoring team.
Â
"It was good to get Tony back out on the court and to see Butler have a solid game," Jackson said. "We still have a way to go on offense, but we are slowly becoming a little bit better. It's the defense that continues to worry me. We will have one or two good defensive possessions and then look like we have never played defense before, so we have to get better."
Â
The two teams have only met once before with Coastal defeating ASU 79-64 back in 1986. The game can be watched and listened to live with the links listed on Game Day Central at bamastatesports.com.
