Hornets Come Back to Defeat Fort Valley State

MONTGOMERY – Tony Armstrong scored 20 points to lead Alabama State to a 105-89 win over a scrappy Fort Valley State men's basketball team.

The Hornets shot a season-best 75 percent from the field in the second half in wiping out a nine-point halftime deficit to pull away by as many as 17 points.

"We did a much better job on the defensive end of the court coming out in the second half," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "We had a lot more energy and played physical where we didn't do that in the first half."

The Hornets (5-7) scored the first five points of the game, but the Hornets could not pull away in the first 20 minutes and the Wildcats got hot and took their first lead of the game at 29-27 on a Eugen Thomas basket.  From there the visitors out-scored ASU 28-19 to take the halftime lead.

"You have to give it to Fort Valley, they came in here and played very good basketball," Jackson said.  "They shot the ball extremely well and took advantage of our lack of defense."

ASU came out in the second half on fire and took the lead at 14:04 left in the game on Terrance LeFlore's basket to make it 58-57.  ASU would never trail again as they rode their hot shooting to the double-digit win.

Jamel Waters had 19 points and a game-high seven assists.  Bobby Brown added 16 points, LeFlore had 14 and Covon Butler continued his solid scoring with 13 points.

ASU out rebounded the visitors 33-23 with Armstrong's six leading the way.  Brown had five and Butler and Steve Rogers had four each.

The Hornets finished the game shooting a season-best 58 percent from the field.  They hit 12 of their 26 three point field goals and that includes eight of 11 in the second half.  The Hornets struggled at the free throw line where they hit 15 of 23 for 65 percent.

Former Hornet Ralph Wilson led FVSU (2-10) with 16 points.  Marcelis Hansberry scored 14 points off the bench while LeRoy Broner added 12 and Tyler Edwards had 11.

The Hornets defense failed them in the first half as the visitors shot 67 percent from the field in building a 55-46 lead. Hanesberry came off the bench to spark FVSU with 12 first half points and Bell added 10.  The Wildcats hit five of nine from beyond the three point line.

ASU shot 46 percent from the field as Butler's 11 points led the Hornets.  ASU only hit five of its 15 three point field goals and was six-of-nine at the free throw line.

Tonight's game was the final non-conference game on the schedule.  The Hornets will begin SWAC play Saturday, Jan.2 at Jackson State.  The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip.  The game will be carried live on the ASU Hornets Radio Network and HSRN.  The game will be shown live on the SWAC Digital Network.
