Tekelova picked up the winning
point with her win at five singlesAlabama State University hosted its first tennis double header of the season as North Alabama came to town. Both matches came down to the final two singles matches and it came up a split as the Lady Hornets picked up a 4-3 win and the men fell 4-3.Â
"They (both teams) battled really, really hard," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "I'm very happy with picking up the doubles point on both sides. Picking up that doubles point makes a huge difference. There were some good things that came from the match."
Â
In women's action ASU picked up the doubles points as Arantxiz Wijngaarde and
Marine Cartier picked up a 6-3 win at one doubles and
Brankica Orlovic and
Nicole Tekelova won 6-1 at two doubles.
Â
UNA (1-2) came back in singles picking up wins at one and three singles, before ASU's (1-3) Cartier picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at two singles. With ASU leading 3-2 both five and six singles were on the court heading into the third set.
Â
Freshman
Nicole Tekelova picked up the winning point at five singles with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 win to hand the Lady Hornets their first win of the season.
Â
"I am so proud of the women and how they played," Christiansz said. "We were missing Irina today, but the girls really stepped up for her. They played so hard in picking up the win and I couldn't be prouder of them."
Â
The men started the match off taking the doubles point as
Karlo Skvorc and
Takura Mlambo won a tight 7-6 game at two doubles and
Ronald Mataba and
Adam Coyne won by the same score at three doubles.
Â
Mlambo gave the Hornets (0-5) a 2-0 lead with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win at two singles. From there UNA (2-1) mounted a comeback winning at one, five and six singles to take a 3-2 lead.
Â
With three and four singles on the court for the Hornets both Skvorc and Mataba went into third sets and fell behind. Mataba trailed 5-4 before winning the final three games for a tough 7-5 win and evening the games at three, but only minutes later Skvorc could not complete his comeback falling 5-7, 6-3, 3-6.
Â
"That was a big win for Ronald coming back and Karlo almost fought his way back," Christiansz said. "We need a little bit of help from the bottom of the lineup, but you can tell we are getting better every time out and that is what I am expecting. We are getting there."
Â
Both teams will be back on the court Sunday, Feb. 15 when they host Mercer. The matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
