Tennis Falls to Jacksonville State

Alabama State University's men's and women's tennis teams faced tough conditions and tougher opposition Friday when they hosted a double header against Jacksonville State University.

The Hornets will continue to search for their first win of the season after falling to the Gamecocks 6-1, while the Lady Hornets were trumped by JSU 5-2.

Despite the scoreboard disparity, Head Coach Anuk Christiansz was assertive about the both teams performance. "There has been improvement and that's positive we're just not executing" he said post match.

ASU came out strong in all the doubles but fell short on the women's side, losing two close matches.  The men's one doubles team of Patrik Cvik and Digvijay Naruka clinched the men's doubles point with a 6-4 victory, with Adam Coyne and Ronald Mataba previously winning 6-4 at three doubles.

"They played very well and I was happy with the fight and heart that they displayed to keep going to the end" Christiansz said of the Lady Hornets.  "The guys just need to show more consistency.  We are individually playing better, but then we just seem to shoot ourselves in the foot" he said.

The Lady Hornets had hard fought wins at two and four singles thanks to Marine Cartier, 7-5, 7-5, and Irina Cvijovic, 6-4, 7-5, respectively.  The trend of tight matches was prominent through the women's match with Arantxia Wijngaarde and Nicole Tekelova losing in three sets, and Brankica Orlovic losing a very tight two set match.

For the Hornets, Takura Mlambo was the stand out, losing 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 once the match had already been clinched.

It is a short turn around for both teams, as Tuskegee University travel to play at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Centre on Saturday at 11a.m.
