ASU Tennis Sweeps Tuskegee

If "winning breed's confidence", then the opposite must hold true in terms of sports.  That was the challenge facing the Alabama State University tennis teams on Saturday as they hosted Tuskegee University.

While both the teams had been playing a good level of tennis, results were saying otherwise, with the Lady Hornets notching only a single victory before today's encounter and the men still searching for their first win of the season as a team.

Confidence was a definite boost in ASU's last outing before next week's Southwestern Athletic Conference roundup next week, with both the men and women sweeping Tuskegee 7-0.

"We have the talent to win the conference; we just need the consistency to go along with it.  The men and the women have been tested and we are ready for the roundup next week" said Head Coach Anuk Christiansz after the match.

The men (1-7) bounced back from their tough loss at the hands off Jacksonville State yesterday to sprint out of the gates an take the doubles in quick fashion, with number two pairing of Takura Mlambo and Karlo Skvorc storming to an emphatic 6-0 win.  The women's doubles were not to be outdone, with the number one team of Arantxia Wijngaarde and Marine Cartier also not dropping a game winning the set 6-0.

Singles action saw ASU (2-5) dominate nearly all matches.  Women's captain Wijngaarde, at number one, and men's number four Jarred Thompson, the only individuals coming through tough matches to win 4-6 6-6 10-3 and 6-3 6-3 respectively.

The ASU teams will take to the practice courts this week to hone their skills before departing on Thursday, for the first SWAC round up in Jackson, Mississippi.
