Lady Hornets Tennis WIns Two at SWAC Round Up; Men Fall in Close One

The Alabama State University men's and women's tennis teams continued their Southwestern Athletic Conference campaigns Saturday with a double header against Prairie View A&M University, followed by the women playing Grambling State University in the afternoon.

ASU's (2-8/1-1 SWAC) men lost a close match to the panthers 4-3, with the Lady Hornets victorious over PVAMU, 6-1, and Grambling State University, 7-0.

"The match against Prairie View always has a lot of noise and tension.  We beat them in the SWAC tournament last year and they beat us the year before so it has that sense of rivalry to it," said Hornets head coach Anuk Christiansz.

The double header against Prairie View was full of tension and excitement from start to finish from both the men and the women.  "The men came out a bit flat for the doubles and that cost us in the end after some tough singles matches.  The women played great and really took control of their matches and played a very high level," said Christiansz.

The Hornets lost the doubles point in quick fashion, with losses at one and three 6-0 and 6-1 respectively.  They responded in an aggressive manner with tight matches across the board in singles play.  After Takura Mlambo, Ronald Mataba and Jarred Thompson all won in straight sets at two, four, and five, the match came down to freshman Karlo Skvorc at three singles.  After dropping the first set quickly, he fought back to level the match at a set a piece before falling agonisingly short, 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Panthers.

The Lady Hornets (5-5/3-0 SWAC) continued their good run of form into the encounter with PVAMU sweeping all three doubles matches to go up 1-0 in dominating style.  Sophomore Brankica Orlovic clinched the match with a win at three singles, following wins from Irina Cvijovic at four and Nicole Tekelova at six.  Even with the result no longer in doubt, the Lady Hornets showed their strength with Marine Cartier, three, and Matabe Akoachere, five, also picking up wins and Arantxia Wijngaarde losing in three sets.

The women followed up their win over PVAMU with another win in the afternoon over Grambling State.  Single wins went to Wijngaarde, Orlovic, Cvijovic, Akoachere and Brianna Fairley sealing the Lady Hornet's fourth consecutive win after sealing the doubles point.  The Lady Hornets have now won four consecutive matches and five of their last seven.

The teams will take their good form to the practice courts to try and improve ahead of their encounter with Tennessee State University.  ASU will host the double header, Thursday Mar. 5, at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Centre.
