Hornets to Host Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Alabama State University men's basketball team will be back home for the next three games beginning with Saturday's action against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. and can be watched and listened to live on HornetVision at bamastatesports.com.  Live stats for the game will also be available for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match up.

UAPB (7-16/4-5 SWAC) enters the game currently tied for fourth place in the conference and winners of four of their last five games.

The Golden Lions boast one of the top offensive players in the conference in Marcel Mosley.  The senior leads the SWAC averaging 17.2 points per game.  He also leads the SWAC averaging 2.2 three point field goals made per game and is the conference's top free throw shooter knocking down 82 percent of his charity shots.

"We have our work cut out for us with Mosley," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "He can shoot midrange jumpers, he can hit the three ball and if you foul him he doesn't miss at the free throw line."

In their previous meeting this season UAPB jumped out to a 22-3 lead before half of the first 20 minutes was even over.  From there ASU outscored the Golden Lions 26-14 to cut the lead to seven at halftime.

ASU (12-6/8-1 SWAC) came out in the second half still on fire to the tune of a 14-5 run over the first six minutes of the half and took their first lead of the game on two free throws from Bobby Brown.  The game settled down to a back-and-forth from that point on with ASU holding on for a 74-71 win.

Brown finished the game with 20 points to lead ASU while Wendell Lewis (16) and Maurice Strong (15) also hit for double digits.  Mosley led UAPB with 19.

UAPB has one of the top defenses in the SWAC only allowing 67.5 points per game.  A lot of that is based on the full court pressure the Golden Lions put on the opposition to get the ball up the court.  They lead the league in steals averaging nine per game, and that leads to a lot of layups.  They forced ASU into 16 turnovers in their first match up which led to 21 points off turnovers.

"We have to do a better job of handling their pressure defense," Jackson said.  "We know what they are going to do and that is pressure the ball all the way up the court.  Their guards are as quick as anyone we face and they do a very good job of getting into the passing lane or just forcing a bad throw and turnover.  We did not handle it was well as we should have in the first game against them and as well as they are playing now it will be even harder."

The Hornets do have a slight size advantage which they were able to take advantage of in the first game, as Lewis and Strong both had double digit scoring.  ASU used the advantage to outrebound UAPB 39-22 and that included 15 offensive rebounds which the Hornets turned into 15 second chance points.

Jamel Waters continues to lead the Hornets in scoring (12.7), assists (5.2) and steals (2.0), but he has plenty of help in scoring as ASU boasts six of the top 30 scorers in the conference.  DeMarcus Robinson, who is coming off a 26-point performance at Prairie View averages 10.3 points per game, while Maurice Strong (9.8), Wendell Lewis (9.6), Bobby Brown (9.4) and Luther Page (8.4) have all been the leading scorers in at least one game this season.

"I know we have several players that have stepped up this season and been a scorer for us," Jackson said.  "We like it that way because it has to be harder on the opponents knowing they can't concentrate their defenses on one of two players.  Jamel has done a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense and gets the ball to players in scoring positions.  We will certainly need to continue that if we want to beat a good Pine Bluff team."

The theme night for the game is Elementary School Honor Roll Night as ASU will honor all of those elementary school students who have made the honor roll.
