Tennis Set to Face Southern Mississippi

The Alabama State men's tennis team is set to face a talented and undefeated Southern Mississippi team Saturday Feb. 7 at 3 p.m.  The match will be played at a neutral location which will be hosted by Troy University.

Southern Miss (3-0) will be playing two matches on the trip to Troy as they will face the Trojans earlier in the day before their match with the Hornets.  It's another tough opponent for ASU (0-2) the coaching staff is looking for to help make the Hornets a better team.

"This is a top-notch team and we are excited to play a team this talented," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "It is another match against a strong team that can only make us better down the stretch and get us ready for the SWAC matches."

The Hornets have been working on becoming more consistent from the baseline as well as their first serves and service returns.

"We are in position now if we cut down on our unforced errors we are really going to be competitive," Christiansz said.  "We have been working hard on becoming better on our serves, and that includes a higher percentage of first serves and we have worked on our ground strokes from the baseline and trying to place the ball without the net errors and hitting the ball out errors.  It's still early in the season and as we work and play matches we should get better."

Following this match ASU will play three consecutive home matches before traveling to the season's first SWAC Round Up scheduled for Feb. 27-29.  The first of the consecutive home matches will be Feb. 13 against North Alabama.
