Game Notes
Alabama State University's basketball team has arrived in Houston to begin preparations for tomorrow's quarterfinal game of the 2015 Toyota Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament. ASU will open play Wednesday March 11 against Mississippi Valley State at 2:30 p.m. Â
"It's a one-game tournament and we are excited about that," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "It's an opportunity to go out and play in a tournament and I think we had a good season. Our preseason was good, our regular season was real good and now we are in the third part of the season and this post season play is a one-game season if you don't win, so right now we are focusing in on Mississippi Valley and the things they are doing and their tendencies and the things they are doing."
Â
ASU swept the season series against the Delta Devils, winning 88-76 at Valley on Jan. 12 and turning around and pulling out a close 65-57 win less than a month later in Montgomery.
Â
"They are a very unique team," Jackson said. "They have really good guards and they play loose so you don't have a real general idea of what they are going to do, but we know they are well-coached, play extremely hard and they have guys that are going to put it up."
Â
"We are going to try and take advantage of the things we have and we feel like we have an advantage in size so we have to do a good job of getting the ball inside to our guys around the basket and hopefully we can get some kick outs to guys than can make shots. Here in the tournament you have to have some kind of half-court offense and those are the things we are working on right now and to also be prepared to play good defense."
Â
Jordan Washington is the leading scorer for the Delta Devils averaging 13.5 points per game, but Jeffrey Simmons is a player the Hornets will look out for. He has caused ASU problems in both games scoring 20 points at MVSU and another 15 points when the Delta Devils came to Montgomery.
Â
ASU will go into the tournament led by All-SWAC honorees
Jamel Waters and
Maurice Strong. Waters leads ASU in scoring averaging 13.4 points per game and continues to be one of the top guards in the conference averaging 5.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per outing. Waters averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 assists per game against MVSU in the regular season meetings.
Strong is known for his relentless work on the boards averaging 7.4 rebounds per game, but he is also solid around the basket averaging nine points per game while shooting 45 percent from the field. In ASU's two meetings against MVSU this season Strong has averaged 13 points while shooting 60 percent from the field.
Â
Along with Strong, part of the height advantage ASU will try to use will come from 6'10" center
Wendell Lewis who is averaging 9.5 points per game while shooting right at 50 percent from the field.Â
Luther Page will be used in the post as well coming off the bench. Page is one of the top field goal percentage players in the conference averaging over seven points per game while shooting 54 percent from the field. Page also averages 5.4 rebounds per game.

There has been a change in the brackets, seedings, opponents and game times for the women's part of the SWAC Tournament. The Lady Hornets had originally been scheduled to face Prairie View A&M Thursday March 12 at 6 p.m. Due to the changes, the Lady Hornets are now the third seed in the tournament and will face the sixth seed Grambling State. The game will still be played Thursday, but game time has moved to a noon tip. That game can also be heard on bamastatesports.com.
