Men's Tennis Falls to Nationally-Ranked Troy

The Alabama State University men's tennis team had one of their toughest matches of the season Sunday as they hosted No. 58 Troy University at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.

ASU (2-13) fought hard against the nationally ranked Trojans, but could not come up with an upset, falling 4-0 once the match was clinched.

Head Coach Anuk Christiansz was not discouraged after the match, praising the effort of his players after the contest.

"They boys fought incredibly well.  Troy is a very talented team and that shows in the fact they're nationally ranked.  It will always be tough in matches like these but we competed all the way in singles and had good energy in doubles," Christiansz said.

"Sometimes it's good to play clinch, other times its bad.  Today I thought we were unlucky because the matches that were still going were tight and could have gone our way and given those guys a lot of confidence."

Troy gained the upper hand in doubles with quick service breaks at numbers one and two.  After Patrik Cvik and Digvijay Naruka lost 6-1 at one, Troy (15-5) clinched the doubles point after Takura Mlambo and Karlo Skvorc couldn't overcome the break of serve, falling 6-4.

As if battling a nationally ranked team wasn't enough, the Hornets also had to deal with the heat after rain interrupted the week of practice.  Not to be disheartened by the doubles, ASU came out determined to fight and push the Trojans.  Although the fight was there, it wasn't enough as ASU fell at number two, five and six singles.

The Hornets will take to the practice courts in preparation for their March 19 match hosting the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  The match will begin at noon at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
