Freshman Steve Rogers scored a career-high 26 points, but it was not enough as the Hornets fell to Prairie View A&M 67-65 in another tight Southwestern Athletic Conference game. Â
"Tough loss," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "Prairie View came in on a high note that they have done in the last seven ball games and playing with a lot of confidence getting into their offense and making you play defense, they were really bringing it to us there."
Â
"We waited too late to get aggressive and start hustling and playing defense, scrapping like we did the last six, seven or eight minutes of the ball game and we have to understand we have to play like that from start to finish with your hustling and scrapping and getting in there and playing tough and stop standing around and watching the other team."
Â
Rogers scored his game-high points on eight-of-11 shooting, including hitting five of his seven three point attempts and all five of his free throws.
Â
"Rogers was impressive tonight," Jackson said. "I thought he worked hard defensively, he made shots and it seemed like he was the only one out there shooting the ball with confidence for the better part of the ball game."
Â
Jamel Waters scored 15 points and
Maurice Strong added 11, but the Hornets only shot 38 percent from the field. Free throws were another problem tonight for ASU as they only hit 10 of their 19 attempts and only hit six of their final 11 attempts.
Â
ASU trailed 55-46 with 6:35 left in the game when they started making their final push and just like in Prairie View earlier in the year when the Hornets hit a shot at the horn to win the game, this game came down to the final play. After a PVAMU missed free throw with seven seconds left, Waters took the ball and went coast-to-coast and just when he looked as if his layup would send the game into overtime; Karim York came out of nowhere to block the shot and preserve the game for the Panthers.
Â
John Brisco led Prairie View with 23 points and Tre Hagood added 13. York finished with 12 points going along with his four blocked shots as PVAMU continues to be the hottest team in the SWAC with their seventh consecutive win.
Â
ASU (16-9/12-4 SWAC) out rebounded the taller Panthers 46-35 with Strong's nine leading the way. Waters had a game-high seven assists to go with his point production.
Â
Rogers led the Hornets into a 30-29 halftime lead with 13 points on five-of-seven shooting, including hitting three of his four three point attempts. ASU only shot 35 percent from the field but did out rebound the taller Panthers 25-20 with 10 of those coming on the offensive end.
Â
PVAMU (13-16/11-5 SWAC) shot 39 percent from the field and Brisco led the Panthers with nine points, all on three pointers. York added six and Hagood and Onwukamuche added five each.
Â
ASU will end the season on the road beginning with Thursday's game at Grambling State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and can be listened to live on bamastatesports.com.
