ASU Tennis Falls at Nationally-Ranked Alabama

The Alabama State Hornets traveled to Tuscaloosa Saturday as the men's tennis team played the University of Alabama in back-to-back matches.
Playing under the lights, the Hornets put in an impressive display but were defeated 4-1 and 4-0 in the matches.

"Today we played a tough opponent.  They are a good team and they should be ranked this week.  They have quality players and our guys fought all the way.  We still had chances and I was impressed with the quality of play from all of our guys.  We fought well they were just too good in the end." Said Head Coach Anuk Christiansz post match.

The Hornets (2-10), lost the doubles point in both matches but not before pushing the Crimson Tide (11-9).  The win at number two doubles from Takura Mlambo and Karlo Skvorc, 6-4, had the Hornets poised to steal the point.  With the doubles coming down to the pairing of Ronald Mataba and Adam Coyne against  Alabama's number one team of Lovett and O'Shaughnessy , ranked 26th in the nation for doubles, ASU fell painstakingly short losing 7-5.

"The doubles was really good today.  Effort was there from point one against a quality opposition.  Mataba and Coyne served for the match against a team top 30 in the nation and played unbelievable, their match could have easily gone our way.  Tak (Mlambo) carried it over to singles too and played great to earn his win" Christiansz said.

In singles play, Takura Mlambo was the standout.  Playing at number four, his powerful groundstrokes were matched by his deft touch as he won 6-4, 6-4, in a heated affair to give the hornets their lone singles victory of the day.

The Hornets, despite falling, were competitive courtesy of Mataba, Coyne and Patrik Cvik, who was forced to retire early in the third set due to injury after some impressive tennis that saw him win the first set in quick fashion.

ASU will take to the practice courts to try and improve their record and their form as they host South Dakota State University in a double header on Mar. 11, at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Centre.
