Alabama State traveled to Birmingham to make up an earlier rained out match with Tennessee State and came away with the sweep as the Lady Hornets won 7-0 and the Hornets won 5-2.
Â
"It was good to get back out on the court and get another match in," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "It was good to get the wins and the women continue to plug away and do some solid things and the men got a win, but they could have played a lot better."
Â
The women made quick work of the Tigers in picking up their eighth win of the season. After winning all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, ASU won all of the singles matches with singles wins coming from Arantxia Wijngaarde,
Brankica Orlovic,
Irina Cvijovic,
Matabe Akoachere,
Nicole Tekelova and
Brianna Fairley.
Â
The win for the men did not come as easy as they dropped the doubles point with losses at one and two doubles. The Tigers came into the match with five players so they gave the Hornets a point at six singles. With the match even at one going into singles play it meant the team to win three of the five singles would win the match.
Â
The Hornets (7-15) picked up those three wins with
Patrik Cvik,
Takura Mlambo and
Jarred Thompson securing the win as Thompson's win at four singles clinched the match for the Hornets.Â
Karlo Skvorc picked up the final singles win for the Hornets.
Â
"The men came out flat in losing the doubles point," Christiansz said. "We have to do a better job of coming out ready to play in doubles. We have lost that point several times this season and it has come back to haunt us. Today we did a good job of picking it up in singles play, but we can't always count on that."
Â
ASU will host Alabama A&M in their final regular season match of the season. The match is scheduled for Saturday April 4 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center and will begin at 1 p.m. Before the start of the match the tennis teams will honor two seniors
Stefan Vojnic and
Nathalie Lorenco.
