Hornets Move Into Finals; Lady Hornets Fall in Semis

For a program that had never made an appearance in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tennis Championship Finals, the Alabama State University men's tennis program will make their second consecutive appearance after dropping second-seeded Prairie View A&M 4-0 in today's semifinal match.

The two teams played less than a month ago with PVAMU coming out on top 4-3, but this time it was all Hornets in the shutout victory.

In the first meeting between the two, the Hornets (11-15) dropped all three doubles matches, but won the doubles point this time around with Takura Mlambo and Karlo Skvorc winning 6-2 at two doubles and Ronald Mataba and Adam Coyne winning 6-4 at three doubles.

Heading into singles play with a 1-0 lead, the Hornets made quick work of PVAMU with straight set single wins from Patrik Cvik (6-1, 6-1) at three, a 6-0, 6-0 win at four singles from Skvorc and Jarred Thompson finishing the match with a clinching 6-2, 6-1 win at five singles.

"I told the men how important it was to come out with a lot of energy in doubles play and to win that doubles point, and that is exactly what they did," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "Even after the move into singles play they came out with that same energy level and were able to beat a very good Prairie View team."

In the first match of the day the Lady Hornets (10-11) saw their season come to an end with a hard fought 4-1 loss to defending conference champion Southern University.

The Lady Jags won the doubles point with a 6-3 win at one and 6-2 a win at two doubles.  In singles action Nicole Tekelova scored ASU's lone point with a 6-0, 6-2 win at five singles.  Marine Cartier was up a set and 4-0 in the second at two singles, but Southern was able to secure their needed three points with wins at one, three and four singles.

"I was extremely happy with how the women fought in today's match," Christiansz said.  "They played the way they have all season as they just fought and fought.  Unfortunately Southern is the reigning champion for a reason and they made some really good shots today.  I am looking forward to this team next year as we have seven of our eight players returning and they will all have another year of experience under their belt."

As far as tomorrow goes for the Hornets, they will face the winner of today's late match between Jackson State and Alcorn State.  The championship match is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. at City Park.
