SPARTANBURG, SC  – The Lady Hornets soccer team will hit the road for a three-game swing beginning Friday at South Carolina-Upstate of the Atlantic Sun Conference at 5 p.m. / 4 central.
Alabama State (0-2) will be seeking a victory in consecutive seasons against the Spartans, whom the Lady Hornets topped 1-0 in Montgomery last season behind a winning goal from
Aaliyah Lewis.Â
"We're going on the road for the first time this season," said ASU women's soccer head coach
Jodie Smith.
"Certainly, they're going to want to defend their field. They've had some mixed results with a really good win against a pretty solid Citadel team and lost to ETSU [East Tennessee State]. So, we're trying to get a handle on what to expect from them. I know that they'll be better."
USC-Upstate (1-1) is coming off a convincing 5-0 win against the Citadel on Sunday on the strength of senior midfielder Haley Gethin, who became the fourth player in the history of the program to score a hat trick.Â
"We're definitely aware of her," Smith said. "She [Gethin] played a really good game against us last year. She's talented and able to finish when she gets opportunities so we'll have to make sure that we account for her."  Â
Junior forward
Ariela Lewis was a big factor in ASU's 3-2 defeat to Troy on Tuesday, scoring a goal and adding an assist to lead the team.Â
Ar. Lewis scored her first goal since Nov. 8, 2013 in a 2-1 victory against Prairie View A&M in a SWAC Tournament Semifinal match.Â
"Having her back on the field and running confident is a bit like having a new recruit that teams didn't face last year," Smith added.Â
"If we play with the type of energy that we had Tuesday against Troy, we'll have a good opportunity to be successful."
