MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State University men's basketball team will end its current three-game homestand when they host Alabama A&M Saturday, Jan. 16 at 5 p.m.

Both teams have struggled since the start of conference play and each will enter the game with a 1-3 SWAC record.

ASU (6-10 overall) enter the game fresh off a home loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.  It was a game which the Golden Lions were able to slow the game down and take advantage of the Hornets weaknesses in shooting and defense.

ASU entered the game only shooting 39 percent from the field, but was second in the SWAC in scoring at over 71 points per game.  UAPB's 2-3 zone defense caused ASU problems the whole game as ASU only managed to shoot 33 percent from the field and missed all 13 of its three-point attempts.

UAPB's slow down offensive game also took advantage of the Hornets defense and shot 48 percent from the field in the 59-55 victory.

"We just are not a very good team right now," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said following the game against UAPB.  "We are not a good defensive team at this point of the season.  We are not shooting the ball well and we have a lot of improving to do."

Tony Armstrong is fast becoming the Hornets go-to guy in the post.  The redshirt junior has two 20-point games to his credit among the eight games he has played.  He is averaging 12.3 points per game and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game and also shooting over 51 percent from the field.

Senior guard Jamel Waters leads the team in scoring (14.1), assists (72) and steals (30).  He continues to be one of the top three-point threats as his .438 shooting from beyond the three-point line is second in the conference.

Bobby Brown is averaging 9.7 points and six rebounds per game and Corvon Butler, who has only played sparingly the past two games has seen his average drop to 9.3 points per game.  Butler has only scored six points during these two home games due to an injury limiting his play.  The Hornets need for him to heal and get back to his scoring and rebounding.

Alabama A&M (5-8 overall) boasts two of the top offensive and rebounding players in the conference.  Senior Ladarius Tabb leads the SWAC in scoring at 22.2 points per game.  He is the only player in the conference averaging over 20 points per game.  He is also the second-leading rebounder in the SWAC averaging 7.6 per game.

Nicholas West is sixth in the league in scoring averaging 14.3 points per game, and leads the SWAC in rebounding averaging just a little more than Tabb at 7.8.

AAMU is second in scoring among the conference teams averaging 71.9 points per game.  ASU will enter the game fourth at 70.4.  The Bulldogs are also among the top of the conference in scoring defense allowing 73 points per game which is fourth.  The Hornets are eighth allowing 77.1.

"We know A&M will come in here ready to play," Jackson said.  "They got us here last year for the first time in 10 years, so we will have to come out ready to play and will need to play our best game of the season."

The game will be broadcast live on SWAC Digital Network and can be listened to live on the ASU Hornets Sports Network, with live coverage on 100.5 FM. The game can also be heard on Satellite Radio at Sirius 145 and XM Chanel 204.
