MONTGOMERY – Alabama State and Prairie View A&M have a few things in common, one they both have one win in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and two, they are out to break a losing streak.
Â
ASU (6-14/1-7) will host the Panthers Monday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. ASU has dropped five consecutive games while PVAMU (1-19/1-7) has dropped six.
Â
"It sounds like a broken record but this is unfamiliar territory for us," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We have actually been playing pretty good in games, but like I have said before we have been unable to do the things down the stretch we need to do to win ball games."
Â
"I am happy with the effort and intensity, but we take a bad shot when we shouldn't, we turn the ball over late in games, and we miss free throws at the wrong times, but I still believe in this team and we can be a factor in the conference race."
Â
PVAMU also comes into Montgomery with a program that saw its head coach Byron Rimm resign last Thursday right before PVAMU embarked on its current road trip. Â They come into the game with only one win on the season and fell at Alabama A&M 83-69 Saturday evening.
Â
The Hornets are coming off a game where they out played Texas Southern in every aspect of the game except for rebounds and free throws.
Â
The Hornets outshot the Tigers, had fewer turnovers, had more assists, hit more three point field goals and shot better from behind the three point line.
Â
TSU was able to out rebound ASU 49-41 and the biggest problem for ASU was the fact TSU got to the free throw line 26 times and hit 23 of those, whereas the Hornets only got to the free throw line eight times hitting seven. The 16-point differential in free throw scoring was more than the Hornets could make up in the 75-72 loss.
Â
"After looking at the film we were able to see a lot of things that we can do better, but the film shows we did a lot of good things and that is a plus. We just have to keep getting better," Jackson said."
Â
Jamel Waters has been playing his best basketball over the past two weeks. In ASU's last three games he has averaged 21 points per game while shooting right at 50 percent from the field. He has his average up to 15.3 points per game while continuing to average over 4.5 assists.
Â
Tony Armstrong continues to average double-digits in scoring at 12 points per game, while also grabbing six rebounds.Â
Corvon Butler is coming off a double-double against TSU and is averaging 9.6 points and a team-high six rebounds per game.
Â
PVAMU will come into Montgomery with two players reaching double-digits each game. Tevin Bellinger is the team leader averaging 11.8 points per game, and also has a team-high 33 assists per game. Admassu Williams averages 10.6 points per game.
