Jamel Waters was honored
before the game for scoring
his 1,000th career pointMONTGOMERY – Jamel Waters grabbed an offensive rebound and stuck it back in the basket with 2.5 seconds left to give the Hornets a 75-74 overtime win over Mississippi Valley State.Â
The score culminated a game which saw a cold-shooting ASU team survive the three point shooting of MVSU. The Delta Devils entered the game only shooting 30 percent from beyond the three point line, but hit 44 percent against the Hornets.
Â
"It was good to see the guys never give up, but we are not playing very good right now," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "We are not shooting the ball very well and we are not playing good on the defensive end, but we will keep working at it."
Â
Waters finished the game with 13 points, as did
Tony Armstrong and
Mikel Tyson.Â
Torloft Thomas came off the bench along with Tyson and scored 12 points.
Â
Tyson equaled his career-high in points and had a career-high with a game-high 13 rebounds as ASU won the rebounding battle 60-43.
Thomas hit four free throws in the final minute and his two free throws with just over 13 seconds left sent the game into overtime as the Hornets knocked the ball away from MVSU in the final seconds and the clock ran out.
Â
"I though
Mikel Tyson had a huge impact on this game," Jackson said. "He had some big rebounds for us and hit his free throws which we really needed tonight."
Â
ASU (6-9/1-2 SWAC) hit 25 of their 37 free throws, but missed six consecutive in overtime as they were trying to hold on to a 73-68 lead. As they were missing those free throws, MVSU was able to scored six straight points to take a 74-73 lead with 25.5 left in the game.
Â
The Hornets were holding for the final shot and
Bobby Brown had an open look but the ball went in and came out and a hustling Waters was able to get in between the taller players for the final rebound and score.
Â
"Waters just never gave up on the play," Jackson said. "We had the play set up for him but he threw the ball to Bobby who was open and had a good look at the basket, but Jamel just never gave up on the play."
Â
Marcus Romain had a game-high 23 points before fouling out in the overtime period. Isaac Williams came off the bench for the Delta Devils and scored 18 points of seven-of-10 shooting including hitting four of his three point attempts. Damian Young also hit double digits with 17 points.
Â
MVSU (1-15/1-1 SWAC) shot 37 percent from the field, 44 percent from the free throw line, but struggled from the free throw line hitting 13 of their 24 attempts (54%).
Â
ASU's cold shooting started coming out of the gate in the opening 20 minutes. The Hornets could only manage 20 percent shooting in the first half on their way to trailing 29-25.
Â
Tyson came off the bench to score seven points, all at the free throw line. He also had nine rebounds as ASU did out rebound the visitors 31-24.
Â
Young led MVSU with nine points and Ta'Jay Henry at seven rebounds. The visitors forced the Hornets into 10 first half turnovers which turned out to be the difference as MVSU struggled from the field as well only shooting 30 percent.
Â
ASU will continue the current three-game home stand when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
