Lady Hornets Basketball Falters to Grambling

Grambling topped the Lady Hornets 89-69, at the Frederick C. Hobdy Arena, Monday night in SWAC road play.

The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before the Lady Hornets got on the boards in the first quarter with 6:13 left on the clock. ASU was able to chip into the lead knotting the game at 21-21 with two seconds left on the clock.

The second quarter saw the Lady Hornets and Tigers taking a back and forth lead until Grambling took a four point lead into half

"We were doing well until we stopped playing defense," said Lady Hornets Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "We started missing assignments and allowing Grambling to make a run on us. We have got to do a better job keeping control of the ball and defending it like we should have."

Alabama State (2-8, 0-2 SWAC) was led in scoring by Daniele Ewert who had a season high of 17 points. Ewert was the only player in Double figures for the Lady Hornets. Jasmine Peeples and Britney Wright each had six rebound and six points apiece in the game.

Grambling's (7-5, 2-0 SWAC) Jazmine Boyd led both teams in scoring with 27 points and seven rebounds. Teammates Shakyla Hill had 21 points and also seven rebounds. While, John'ea Thompson added 19 points and five rebounds for the Lady Tigers. Boyd and Hill lead on the boards for Grambling.

Alabama State started the third quarter off with a layup by Ashanti Spencer, but not long after that is when the Lady Tigers took control going on a 10-0 run. ASU eventually scored with 5:55 left in the quarter. At that point both teams went on a back and forth spree, for a bit, but it was too much for the Lady Hornets, as the Lady Tigers went on its final run before closing the quarter with an 11 point lead (62-51).

Grambling controlled the final quarter scoring 27 points to ASU's 18. Grambling held ASU to 38 percent shooting, while they had a season high of 66 percent.

"We had a lot of opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them like we should have. We will go from here and get ready for the next challenge."

Alabama State will return to the court on Saturday, January 9 when they face Mississippi Valley in the SWAC home opener at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome
