MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – Despite dropping the first set, the Alabama State women's volleyball team regrouped in time behind a dazzling performance from junior
Briana Dorsey as the Lady Hornets extended its' winning streak to 11 straight with a 3-1 SWAC victory (22-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-19) against Alabama A&M on Saturday morning at Lockhart Gymnasium.
Dorsey played a practical flawless game with 14 kills, no errors on 18 total attacks for an off-the-charts .778 hitting percentage to go along with a combined five blocks.
The middle blocker's .778 hitting percentage was a season-best for the Fort Worth, Texas native.Â
Dorsey upped her hitting percentage to .363 for the season as she leads the conference in that category for players with a minimum of three total attacks per set.Â
She also now ranks third in the SWAC in kills with a career-high 167.Â
"I think Bri [Dorsey] had an outstanding match," said sixth-year ASU head women's volleyball coach
Penny Lucas-White.Â
"We didn't play our best, but we pulled it out. I expect to come out and hit the court hard on Monday [in practice] and prepare for UAB [on Wednesday]. We've got to perform better than what we did today. We didn't adjust on the block or talk enough to point out where they had a smaller block. I was disappointed in that, but we started to pass better to hit the middle of the floor."Â
Alabama State (12-7 overall, 9-0 SWAC) began to find their hitters as the match wore on, particularly in the second and fourth sets where it cut down on errors.Â
Setters
Kori Kutsch and
Justus Tuiolosega split the work evenly by picking up 24 assists apiece.Â
Defensively,
Jamie Coleman led the team with 23 digs.
Next, the Lady Hornets will host UAB in a nonconference match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.Â
It will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation night.Â
